question #2. i took off the back head, and it is all gold-looking, compared to the front. what would cause this? thanks for your help.

You need to replace all the seals while it's open. They are all contained in the fel pro set vs50378r from AutoZone.com around $75.

1. The whole upper gasket kit is available from Felpro. It gives you the valve cover gaskets as well as the spark plug well gaskets that you need. The Felpro part number is: VS50378R

2. The gold is residue from oil. Rub your finger along it and it will come off. Try some Castrol GTX oil. It seems to be the oil of choice on these engines.

Check the valve shims and replace any that are out of spec. You should probably replace the spark plugs also (only use the proper Ford Motorcraft plugs and nothing eles) Do a search here for "valve shims" or "60k tune-up" for more info. The correct parts are a bit more but your SHO will be much happier. Have fun!

Yes- take a good look in the inside corners to see the holes that run to the oil pan. Make sure you don't drop anything in there.

Also be careful not to torque the valve cover bolts too hard during reinstall. They break very easily.

Just so you know, I tried to order the VC set from Autozone, but they told me that their supplier was "temporarily out of stock". I went to Advance Auto, and they will match the price. They were in the next day. I was thrilled to have the proper set without having to pay $200 from Ford.
