If your going after a complete rebuid, Blow it up! :laugh_ti: In all seriousness when you spin a bearing out engine is done, you could replace these bearings and it would get you to the summer then you could work on a 3.2 block.

You ought to crawl under the car as well with the screwdriver to see if you can isolate the noise at the lower part of the engine. Hopefully, you won't.

In any case, as was mentioned, when you get a chance you ought to consider changing the rod bearings as a matter of maintenance. Less than $75 in parts in return for a whole lot of peace of mind. Yes you can change the bearings yourself:

ok seems liek im going to be changing my bearings has anyone ever actualyl dones this them selves under there car with jackstands how long did it take and how hard is it i do have some knowledge of engines i have taken engines out and put them in and all that jazz and restored a 69 mustang but im not 100% comfortabel with engines especially the sho engine. Do you guys think i should do this myself? I am kinda low on money (dont have any would be borrowing from the parents) i want to save as much as possible and would lie kto take the engien apasrt but dont want to mess anythign up.

You can do it yourself, with the car on jackstands. I'd guess a majority of people have done it that way.

What you are going to do is take your time on it, and everything is going to work out just fine. I can't recall reading any posts about people screwing the job up, and that's because they didn't rush things and did their research beforehand, which you are going to do, too. Before you even get going you are going to utilize the "search" function and read through every thread that has anything to do with rod bearing replacement. :type:

And, should you run into any problems or questions while you are actually working on the car, what you'll do is put down the tools, wash off your hands, go inside to your computer and then make a post about it here. You will wait for a response and then when you have the information you need you will proceed with the job.

Got it? ;)

Actually, George Fourchy almost died when he cut his hand on the block and recieved a life threatening infection. However, this isn't a common occurence. :)

So, wear latex gloves at a minimum while you do this. Clean mechanics gloves would be better. The edges of the block are sharp and covered in motor oil. Nick, you have my cell #, you can call it if you run into problems and I can try to walk you through it. I did it with the engine on a stand because I was building it but it's not that bad lying on the ground. Do you have a torque wrench? ft lbs and in lbs? in lbs isn't absolutely necessary but you want to be very gentle when you reinstall the oil pump pickup tube. Use a 1/4" ratchet. On that note, the gasket is obsolete but Josh at www.shonutperformance.com sells one. I believe that you can also substitute an ATX EGR gasket in there as well.

I don't know if/when I'll be able to make it up there. My friends still didn't get back to me about that engine. However, I'd consider sitting on it as you may need it if the rod bearing swap doesn't do anything for you.

im not going to go throught the trouble of swappign the atx engine into the mtx because i herd the trans mount is differnet or somethign and at that point ill just fix my engine because my parents dont want it laying aroudn the house we really dont have the room we have to many cars as it is (all fords) and haveing an extra car that doesnt drive or a block laying around my mom wont liek it because it "looks bad" so im sorta stuck. As far as the car give me a call tomorrw any time and let me know if your goign to make it or not but what ill do is video tap the car running and give it some gas so you hear it rev up and stuff adn then ill have to pull those parts because the peopel are waiting for them. If you say you can def make it saturday ro somethign then i can wait but let me know asap.

ok guys went to my mechanics this morning and he said there is nothing wrong wiht my engine he said there is somehting vibrating and thats really as much as i got but i crawled under the car myself and looked and it seems that everything is tight but i can hear that sound still and it seems to be different at certain rpms which is leading me to believe that one of the baffles in my cats is loose because it sounds like its comming from right where one of my cars are. I have the shoshop ypipe with highflow cats and only have 97k miels on the car is it possible that these are bad already?

Yes, check the cats. Tap on the pipe with a hammer and listen for anything rattling around in the pipes. It is very possible that they have come apart and are causing a rattling/knocking sound.

re: your engine. Like I said, I have no idea what's going on with my friends so if you have stuff to sell, don't wait on them. I don't know if they'd care if the engine runs or not as they'd probably want it for a 3.2 swap into an mtx.

Good luck man!
