The shifter on my '92 has been making a really nasty creaking noise lately. At least I think that's where it's coming from. Whenever I change gears, I get a sound like an old rocking chair or something. But it's definitely coming from the center console.

To anyone who's ever removed the thing, is it terribly difficult? I'd just like to get in there with some grease or WD-40 and **** the thing up. It's probably rusted pretty thoroughly at this point, which I'm guessing is where the creaking noise comes from.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The console around the shifter on 92's is just held on by spring clips. Pull straight up to get it off. I know this becasue every now and then it pops party off when I catch an edge of it with my laptop case or backapck.

However, i'm not sure if taking off the console will actually do you any good or not. Easy enough to find out.

My shifter was creaking pretty bad about 3 years ago. Then one day I went to shift into 3rd gear and I lost all tension on the shifter itself, it just flopped over. I removed the entire shifter from under the car and took the black box apart. I found that the piece that the shifter plugs into had broken its welds due to rust. I cleaned it all up, rewelded the pieces, reassembled the whole thing and filled the black box w/HD wheel bearing grease (to prevent rust from forming due to water contamination). Since then no more squeaking and has a great positive feel.

Sounds like that's the way to go. I'm guessing I'll have to actually get under the car then? Did you get a new shifter or just clean the shifter rod off?

Yes, you do have to get under the car and take the whole shifter "box" down. It's not that hard of a job, you'll see what to do when you get under the car and take a look. I helped a guy do it to his 94 for the same reason, and now it's time to do it to my 92 because I'm hearing the ole rocking chair! I'm just waiting for it to warm up a bit...JP

Yeah, warm weather would certainly help. Maybe I can take a look under the car this weekend. The last thing I need is my shifter breaking off.
