Well welcome good sir, I read through this thread and I want to show some respect because although I'm only 3 years older than you I feel that you are just as I was at that age and it's obvious you want to learn all you can about SHO's ( they are amazing sedans ) and proper maintenance.

I would say try your best to purchase a SHO from a forum member and don't do what I did which was jump on the first one that's in reach.

Although $700 up front seemed like a sweet deal though I also knew the car was probably neglected most of it's 210K+ miles, another point to make, avoid any deals with over 150K+ unless purchased with a documented service history of good maintenance etc.

If your going for the Gen 3 good luck, what made the SHO a SHO is the truly gorgeous engine yamaha built and the v8's aren't fully yamaha designed and have problems with their cams ( many people have to have them welded).

Be sure to ask if the cams have been welded when looking for a Gen 3.

With that said, after about $1500 total invested with another $600 to truly restore this car (minus paint job) I am extremely pleased with my ATX SHO, she picks right up like she just rolled off the lot :sun:

I see videos online of the MTX's and hope I get a chance to acquire a mint MTX someday but I find pleasure in my automatic highway rocket.

Your are very lucky to have a father who'll cover the cost of your first car for you, sounds like you'll make the smart choice. I spend hours browsing pics/vids of SHO's I'm addicted just as you and I'm telling you you'll never have a better driving experience from any of the common first cars as you will with a SHO.

I do want to learn about them and their mechanics, to be honest, i love cars but i don't know too much about them so actually knowing about engines and things would be nice.

if you really want to learn about engines and all the other systems go to a boarders or barns and noble they have a pretty wide selection on ins an outs of motors of all kind and it will help you out in the long run for future diagnostic nightmares

If you get a SHO and it runs great without any problems, you'll fall in love and you'll never want to part with it. On the flipside everytime my SHO needs something fixed, i wonder why i bought it.

Thanks, it's still a LONG way from being complete but now that I've got it running strong and the most urgent issues taken care of I'm really starting to enjoy my SHO.

I should have a youtube vid of it up soon, so people can gauge where I'm at at this point. You should check it out if you want.

I sometimes try to get a cheap one or one that needs repairs for free. My e-mails never get returned anyone got a freebie

Hahah, thanks. I will admit it is an awesome car but i still love sho's. I am very grateful for the car though and look forward to empty parking lots with snow

Doesn't the SVX have transmission issues? Overheats or something like that, make sure it has an additional cooler. Very impressive car though I was looking at one before I bought the SHO but didn't want an automatic and the 6-speed is an expensive swap. Congrats on the car though good for a first one, AWD!!!!

you know my 93 was a huge piece of crap and i worked on it at least once a week, however up until the end it never left me stranded and just hearing it start after a repair was enough of a thank you. of course they sound amazing at WOT when the secondaries are open but i could just sit and listen to it idle. i kick myself every time i think about getting rid of it. the SVX is an awesome car, but if you want a SHO you should get one. you might regret it when breaks down and it will but you will get over it when you fix the issue and start it back up.

They are very much Q ships. Few cops know what they are past a POS 15-20 year old Taurus.

This doesn't always happy btw..... the one time I've ever been pulled over (I wasn't speeding for the record), after he gave back my license and registration he says "This is a SHO isn't it? These things are fast."
I was like, "ummm yes they are officer." haha
and it was at night too..... he had good eyes.....

And now that you have made a profile on SHOforum, fun173, it would just be unfair to NOT buy a SHO.

The earlier models were the most affected by he transmission issues. Mine is the last model year, '97 and those were not really affected by the problems.

how do you feel about bouncing around a cars interior like a rag doll?

i know how i feel about it. i can still see the scar on my throat where my neck smashed into the steering wheel so hard i left skin under the stitching in the leather. And part of my scalp in the windsheild. A bit of skin off my wrist was smeared on the shifter. a hole in each leg from the CB under the steering column.

Would have been nice to have an airbag when that guy nailed me head on at 75+ in a fully loaded 96 Explorer.

Thats awful. I'm glad you came out ok though. Just to clarify though, The car in that listing had airbag suspension. I like airbags and know they are a good thing.

Hey I'm 20 and I bought my SHO (94 ATX) a little over a year ago. It's my second car but the first one i bought myself. By the way i was 19 at the time. I bought the car off CL but i bought it because i seemed to be well maintained. It turned out to be a member on here anyway. As everybody has said these cars are loads of fun and you will have a blast. The car has been pretty reliable, I have to replace a few things but its never left me stranded. One time i didn't go to school because of it but i probably could of but, I was just being safe. My dad has always said that with any used car expect to spend a $1000 in repairs the first year you own it and that's about how much i have spent on it.
