Hi guys...this is Jon and this my first post so I might not get it all right but here goes. I have a 93' ATX, the transmission says AXOD SHO on the pan and it had this funky little orange sticker on the bottom when I got the car. Its got 130K on the clock and I am having some tranny problems. When the car is cold all of the shifts are tight and precise. When my car heats up, the 1-2 shift is really spurratic. It feels like it trips into second really slow, then goes back into first, then kicks into second and stays there. The amount of jerking produced by the odd shift is equal to the amount of strain on the trans. If I mash the pedal to the floor the trans bucks when the butterflys open...only in second gear though...my other problem is that the 4-2 or 3-2 downshifts are really slow too. Can you guys help me out? or do I need to get a new Tranny?

Thank You

Sounds like you need a new tranny, consider getting one from Ford Performance Specialist. Do a search on "automatic transmissions" and you'll find everything you need to know about the ATX, like they have a short life span(well, some.)

Thanks for the reply. If I need a new trans I'm gonna part out the car. I heard something about a solenoid sticking or something? does that sound less greek to anyone?

I forgot to mention that the tranny fluid was changed at 122,000 with the 60K tune up. It still didn't help the condition at all. Actually for a while it was pretty bad, even when it was cold it would shift oddly. Then it got better when it was cold but its still bad when its hot. When its hot and shifts into second I get the hesitation and then it kicks into gear so hard I can chirp second. I'm so lost right now. SOS.

Got any more information on what happen to your ATX? Did you only change out the valve body? I have similiar problems and thinking the valves are sticking (no gunk in the pan and no slipping so I hope the ware parts are OK). Before I try a removal and rebuild I am considering just taking out the valve body and replacing or repairing. I am very much interested in your experience.

You may also want to check your codes. I had the same type of problem last year and it was a cooked VSS (vehicle speed sensor). I accidently knocked the VSS heat shield off when I reinstalled the rear head. I replaced the cooked sensor and fixed the shifting problems.

I didn't know the Heat shield was that critical. I know of some cars that have had their VSS's replaced w/o it being put back on.
