It is a highly flawed system though. Body shops are encouraged to underestimate the repair to get the job. They then get the job and start RACKING on the additions. We had one car that was estimated and repaired. The final bill was nearly double the estimate and was actually more than the vehicle was worth. It should have been totaled, but that would not have put money in the shops bank account.

Outside of the auto body shop world, most contractors are held to come in very close to their quoted estimate.
Having worked in 4 different industries I can tell you it was normal in all of them. Currently working for the government I can tell you it's nearly every bid is bid low and then jacked up (either pay it or miss schedule). I can also tell you that even when contractors do that their bids still come in lower than when we do a firm fixed price contract.

Come to work with me and explain that to my customers...
What industry do you work in? Yes some industries don't work this way but it is very common for estimates to be estimates. Have someone do an addition on your house, the bill won't be what was their original estimate. Have someone do any mechanical work on your car (even Ford) and the bill won't be what they originally estimated. I have a buddy that runs a shop and when people demand that he gives them a fixed price, he doubles the estimate (and some people pay that).

Do you have the final itemized replacement bill? Did you compare that do your original estimate? If you're upset with how the industry does things compare those two and then ask yourself if you would be happy if they would have stuck to just the estimate. When I hit the deer and compared the estimate to the receipts I noticed added on a new fender (they showed me the slight bend they noticed later), headlights were much more expensive, and AC condenser. For me, I would much rather have those things that were broken replaced at more money than stick to the original estimate and not have everything replaced. But I guess that's just me.

What industry do you work in? me.
I run a flooring installation business.
When the guy that estimates the job forgets something my customers EXPECT to get the ALL additional materials and work for FREE.
I have worked for the same shop for 19 years They always miss something. I have tried to have them let me bid all jobs but the boss will just do whatever it takes to make the sale... "NO Virtue"
When I estimate my jobs they are to the letter PERFECT. Installed with Professional PRIDE!

And YES I asked for perfection, not the best price when the Ford dealer was fixing my 011 SHO.
Except for the Compound the overspray and broken glass inside. The job was Spot-ON

So Project Fallen Tree is all wrapped up then?
Hello SHOdded,
Smile.... Not even close! This is the FIRST panel.
The entire car has a film of rough patches and places where it looks like they laid plastic on the paint
I do not understand as the Ford dealer body s... shop had the rear bumper cover removed as well as the corner trim with the SHO emblem and the tail lights...
"Shake Head"
I can not tell if the overspray is primer or clear. It is really thin mostly. but there are spots where it takes some serious 1500grit sanding.
