Sweet. Out team, Bringin' Home the Bacon, plans on running another race this fall around Deroit (Nelson Ledges Road Course, OH probably). We plan on re-using our RX-7 too. It was very reliable.

O.K. I am getting interested in doing something like this. Where do I find info on when and were the races take place and the rules for the car? I now have too many parts cars around the corner and one of them needs to do something like this. I am also getting pretty good with the welder as of late so I wouldn't be afraid to put a cage in myself.

It really is budget racing. HPDE's will be so uninteresting after you run a race.
If there is a race close by its so much fun just watching all the cars blow up and the judges beat the crap out of the cars because they look too nice.

I wanna see if I can get a few locals to run Willows and maybe Reno next year. Either split on a $500 car or campaign the car I bought with beer. There are a lot of other costs, I am guesstimating it'll run about $3500 to prep a car/team for the first event, and that's if the other guys buy their own suits/helmets. Obviously once you have a prepped car and all the driving suits and stuff you need, it's only the entry fee, gas, and hotel.

Hotel?! This is LeMons, you don't need no stinking hotel! We slept in lawn chairs in out pit tent and in the back of our cars (it was still warm enough to do that). I think we ran up about $2500 prepping a car for the first time, but we borrowed the racing harness and a quick disconnect steering wheel for free.
You are right with the clothing though. We were lucky enough to borrow suits and helmets too, but we needed to buy the nomex long johns and gloves. Let me tell you, they aren't cheap. At least now we have them for next time though.

Hey this is a pretty informative thread, are you guys going to run the car again. We are attempting to get our Taurus into the Reno event coming up in may. Just got the car last week and are going to start gutting and building the cage this week. We are doing a drag race theme since most of us are into drag racing. Any words of advice things you guys did to make your car last seems like it held up great.
We will probably try to get in at the Reno race.
Reliability is the key. Before you cut and gut the car, you may want to license it and drive it on the road for a few weeks to make sure you work out the bugs and mice. Yes, ours had mice living under the fuel injector rail and all through the car. We thought we had all the mice out before the first race, but the first time we popped the hood, the smell told us otherwise.

I think we were mainly lucky with our RX-7. It hadn't been DD in a year. We made sure to replace the fuel and brake lines, as well as make sure we had enough brakes to make it.
Tires are important too. We bought a slightly used pair of 4, days before the race for $100, I can't remember the brand off hand, but they were summer performance and lasted the entire race, with tread to spare! Not having to change tires, like the other teams that were running ************ street slicks, saved a lot of time.
And of course, it's more about consistency and reliability than it is speed. Sure we pushed it hard a few times for fun, but for most of it we raced at ~85% of the cars potential to save it. We also had a cooling issue, so we didn't redline it constantly and it eventually forced us to take the hood off to keep it cool (in not so hot 55-60F weather too).

Oh that's been tested, the car was driven 3 hours from the point of sale to my shop where it's being worked on Clear Lake to South San Francisco. Think it's road tested. We are going to do a tune up first and check into doing the 60K maintainence on the car and see what we can come up with a member of my website may be letting us borrow an eaton setup for the car also. We shall see I made a new thread to keep everyone posted on the buildup. Thanks for the helpful advice.

How did you guys do on brake pads we were considering bringing spare rotors and pads did you guys go through them??
And for the guys w/ the SHO roughly how much gas did you use??

I think it's awesome that more people are racing SHOs in LeMons. I mean, sure it's depressing that 3 out of 5 SHOs are completely eligible for it *sigh* but it's good to see SHOs representin'!
As far as the "drag" theme, you are speaking of drag racing, right? Cos that would affect the design theme a bit. :laugh_ti:
Naw, just kidding. Anyway, You could put a huge wheelie bar on the back of it - I think the judges would get a kick out of a FWD with a wheelie bar. Plus, you could secretly put weight in it and balance out the car all at the same time.
Personally, from what I've seen, I'd bring spare rotors (at least two sets) spare pads (at least three, I'd bring four), spare hubs and/or lug studs/nuts, a spare engine (you think I'm kidding? Look up "most Heroic Fix" for El Toro Loco last year), a couple of spare struts and LCAs (collisions are likely, and so are parts snapping)... basically a spare SHO or two. I'd bring LOTS of oil as you're likely to - er - create new leaks during the race. I wouldn't worry about getting mobil 1, castrol should work just fine. Use a light weight lol.
You can paint the rear wheel wells to look like it has huge drag slicks on it, paint "Hoosier" over the arch lol. I think that'd be pretty funny. And then, for brownie points, you could glue a bra to the roof and a pair of high heels to the hood. They'd get a kick out of that. Especially if you get to ride around with the blow-up doll on your hood!

Representing 2 different kinds of drag? Why not take it up another notch, paint a guy on the driver door in a dress with hairy legs so it lines up with the driver.
