It happens. I'd check your motor mounts. Depending on how bad it is, you can try to rethread whats left of the mounting boss and use a different bolt(and baby it from now on). Mine lasted a year before I was not able to epoxy it effectively(got sick of re-epoxying it).

To repair it correctly, a new transmission case half will need to be installed or the trans will need to be replaced.

If you choose to replace the case half, who ever does the work should know about "shimming" the differential. If the transmission is in great shape internally, I would recommend replacing the case half instead of taking your chances with a used tranny.

Did you actually lose fluid, or did you just rip the boss out? From what it sounds like, you just ripped the boss out in which case someone used to make a boss brace which might be able to fix your problem. Going to have to search.

edit: I guess i should have finished reading 92rev2sev's post before I wrote

Yes, if you still have the piece of the boss that broke off (I'm guessing it was still attached to the rod), you can have it welded back to the tranny. Find someone experienced with welding aluminum as it requires some special effort and skill.

One of the trannies that I bought used had been repaired this way and it's held up fine.

Did it actually put a hole in the tranny, though? That might be tougher to fix.

FWIW, you might be able to find an entire tranny replacement in a j/y.

yup, some guys have driven up to 1000 miles with blown diff's.

Ejected my pin when just accelerating onto 69 going to muncie (an hour away from where I live), and continued my journey, haha. I continued to drive that car on the 45 minute trek to work (HEAVY traffic. lots of starts and stops) two times a day, five days a week. And would often drive to muncie and back on weekends. I consistently did this for 3 1/2 months. I only refilled the tranny fluid once, 'cause it just leaked everywhere. Since it was shot, I didn't mind being a bit extra rough on it at times, and it still worked! The only reason I parked it was 2nd and 4th gear had started to do a weird grind and humming from the absence of fluid, haha. Who needs a diff pin!? Not me, that's who.

Try to fix the case half. I have seen 2 tranny's that have been re-welded at the stabilizer rod.

*2

and make sure they have the right equipment too. Standard arc welder and aluminum welding electrodes are just not going to cut it, needs to be TIG or wirefeeder...

If I had the welder and was closer I'd be happy to do it for you. :)

Hmmm, note to self: buy proper aluminum welder and go into business repairing cases...

A few posters seem confused about what happened. He broke the shifter stabilizer rod off at the case. He did not blow the diff pins. The previous suggestions are good ones. Tig weld it. Beef up motor mounts so as not to repeat. You will also notice the transmission has several handy unused holes in the general area. You can fabricate a bracket secured to those holes to support the shift rod. The bolt that secures the stabilizer cannot, of course, use the full thread depth in the boss. I think it would be a good mod to replace the bolt with a stud, which could be threaded all the way to the bottom.

:stupid: When I was attempting to show off for a couple of mullet-headed buffoons who swapped a non-turbo 2.2 into a Shelby Z, I snapped my boss. The guy who fixed it just fabbed up a bracket to use one of the other holes in that region, and it worked fine until I grenaded a diff pin almost 2 years later and who knows how many drag passes/broken motor mount bolts/burnouts?

Thanx. I will go that route. didnt really want to spend the money buying another trans when mine is fine and labor FTL. And the motor mounts now that I think about it are horrible. We used to have a shop around here called protech that did the reinforced on my 89 but hes out of bizzness and no one else wants to do the job. Will the welder need to have the tranny out to perform the job or no?

You described that it actually put a hole in the case such that fluid came out. That means that tranny will need to come out and the case cleaned, inside and out, in order for it to be properly welded.

The difference in cost and effort between that amount of work and replacing the tranny altogether with a j/y component is pretty small, so you could go either way IMHO.
