Ok, SO when I am shifting gears, as i press in the clutch it sounds like a turbo waste gate opening up. I was wondering if this is normal or if its the car breathing or if i need to adjust the clutch. ANy help would be great, I dont have a way to post the sound.

Thanks

Richard

My first guess would be the TOB. They tend to make more noise the older they are. How many miles on your clutch?

I also have the same sound. '93 MTX. It really does sound like a blow off valve, does not sound like a TOB. It is a definite whistle. I only experience it when coming off hard throttle.

Any ideas on what it is?

I had that same exact noise when I picked up my 94 MTX last year. 2 weeks later, the diff pin ejected. The sound was no longer present with the replacement trans.

I strongly doubt it is a mechanical or transmission noise. It is almost a whistle, and it really sounds like it comes from the top of the intake close to the firewall (on mine). Definitely air escaping to atmosphere from somewhere.

I hear it also even when not shifting or using the clutch. Many times I will come off hard throttle without disengaging the clutch or shifting and it still makes the noise.

Possibly the butterflys closing?

Some one may have installed one of those 'stealth turbos'.

This one must be "super stealth". But seriously...I have just been attributing it to a whistling vacuum line in the plumbing for the butterfly operation.

If you listen very closely, you can also hear something similar to it when the car is moving, in gear. Mine made it before AND after I replaced my clutch...at first I thought it was my TOB. But after the clutch job, because I have some noticeable bearing noise in the tranny to begin with(and added a ceramic TOB), I linked it with that, figuring it was just worn input shaft bearings spinning down.

It only seems to do it sometimes. The tranny rattles in neutral at idle, and it is also very noticeable when initially engaging gears with the clutch. And becomes more noticeable the warmer it gets.

Does this help you at all?

I've been driving mine for over a year like this...at some points, it was my DD. About 7k miles by me, total. If you notice the same things...check your axle seals. Mine were leaking...who knows for how many years it was like that, and run low because of it. So I'm sure I can blame my noises on that.

^^^ Thanks. I forgot to add that the car drives just fine there is no slipping just the noise. I haven't really fooled with a trans how difficult would shift fork bushings be to replace?

You need to pull the tranny.
