Slapping a HID setup into the stock halogen housing is, as we all know, a bad idea... But what about mounting a projector inside the stock housing?

Granted, that's not a SHO, but it does have the same style lenses (fluted).
IMHO, that beam looks very good. Plus the GenI housings are larger, which wouldn't limit the projector's that could be used.
I'm sure this has been covered on the HID website (hidplanet.com???).. but i'm not a member...

The flutes will scatter the light. Thats the whole point of projector is to concentrate the light. On the gen 1 you can use mustang headlight lens with the oem backing plate.

theres a few members (myself included) that have longterm projects to do jsut that. i am, however, trying to find the best way to clear the headlight (sanding etc) because althoguh that beam pattern is ok, if i'm going to add in projectors i'm going to do it RIGHT and get a nice crisp stepped cutoff.

I hear ya... Doing it right is THE way to go. However, again IMHO, I would be more than happy with a setup like that Camry has. My car's lighting is nothing to laugh at either, with 290 total watts with the low beams, and 330 total watts with high beams it does light up the road, but halogen lamps can only do so much.

IIRC, in the last pictures I saw of your car, your headlight lenses were not very clear and didn't look to be aimed right. Maybe you should get some new housings and aim them correctly. It makes a big difference.

Seems like removing the lens and sanding the inside is the way to get the look you want...

I agree with kzoosho, I have put ALOT of thought into this and some experimentation. Personally, if you are going to take the time to retro a projector to a housing, (quite a bit of work and fabbing) then why the **** wouldn't you get a housing with a clear lens?! You can get the lights for 100 bucks off ebay. Plus the mustang lights already have a spot for the projector so it makes it a ton easier....

If you look at that picture against the wall there is a TON of light above the cut off which GLARES like **** in oncoming traffic... plus you are loosing that light and defeating the purpose of a projector.

That is what a cutoff should look like, otherwise you are projecting light into peoples eyes, and that sucks... But the point is, if you are going to do it, why wouldn't you do it right?!

Oh and for the gen II guys, the disco-ball se headlights have a clear lens, how hard would it be to swap it out?? I haven't looked close enough at the gen II sho headlights...

The discoball lights are a completely different design.

They are less than 3yrs old. I also have them on a HD harness that I built. The fogs have a HD harness as well.

I may pick up a set of 80/100w bulbs and see if they do they job I need my lights to do.

Granted there is some light above the "cut-off". My point in this matter is that it is no where near what the glare would be with HID's in stock housings without projectors.. Actually, the projectors in stock housings probably have ALOT less glare than the stock housings do without HID's.

EDIT: also, it seems as if the camry's lights need to be aimed properly. In the last picture, they look way too high.
