E63s update: New AMR tune is in the car. It is pretty damn good for a first revision. I have asked for an E30 tune and they said they are available. I wonder if the stock fuel pump can keep up. We shall see.

What is nice is I now have datalogging capabilities so that will be nice to see. I wont be able to update you on the car until next week. I am about hop a flight to the Pacific Northwest.

So let me shore some things up.

After I got the tune revision from Dyno Comp after the 1st to 2nd Gear change issue, I never went out and and launched the car. I didnt have any reason to really. I try to limit the wear and tear on parts, and launching a 4800 lbs car in low 3 second territory puts a bunch of stress and wear on those parts. That being said, I was struggling with the 840 lbs of tq that was being delivered at the race start launch RPM.

Little did I know, when race start is activated if you use the shifting paddles you an alter the launch RPM either up or down at 100 rpm increments. So naturally, I wanted to check this feature out. So I did, and the result was the car was a dog. I figured when they altered the gear shift, it had a adverse effect to the race start. However, there is a reason why.......and it was not Dyno Comp's fault.

I had my windshield replaced. My E63s has a form of self driving/highway driving assistance. When the new windshield was replaced, they have to recalibrate the sensors. That means they have to plug into the OBD2 port. Whatever, calibration they used altered my Dyno Comp tune. I figured this out, once I flashed the AMR tune in, my car immediately went 3.30 seconds to sixty foot again and still has the amazing 1st to 2nd gear shift. With that being said, I am going to head out tonight and test the AMR 91 tune. Should be interesting to see because, I have already purchased an E30 tune from AMR. So yeah........going to let her eat.

So the 3.30 0 to sixty with the AMR tune was short lived. Car went back to being slow.

I data logged the AMR tune. Best I could get the car to do was 3.65 0 to 60 that is down almost .5 tenths from 3.1x. The car is not spinning, it is lazy. The quarter mile was an 11.50 @123.36. That is down almost .7 tenths and 7 mph from the Dyno Comp tune. Same thing, car didn't spin, just felt lazy. Remember, I did have Dyno Comp adjust the trans tune. So in my head as I drove home, after the AMR tune went slower than stock....I was convinced that it was the revised trans tune.

However, the data log says different. Everything across the log looks great. AFR is steady at hovering around 11.50 to 1, timing is around 15 degrees, I don't see any major knock. Throttle is open at 100% for the whole run, so there isn't any computer manipulation there. I see commanded boost is about 1.9 bar = 27 psi, but it is only making 1.4 bar = 20 psi with a duty wastegate cycle of 95%. That is problem. My E63 is down significant boost.

So I take it back to Dyno Comp. I asked them to re-flash the previous TCU, ECU, and CPC tune. The tuner is super cool and he did. However, when he went to data log the car on the street.....he came back with the same conclusion. It feels like a dog. So we sat down and reviewed the data log. Everything looked great, but boost is down. He was commanding 1.8 bar, the car only made 1.4 bar. We walked out and looked at the car. We eliminated cracked intakes. Both throttle bodies were seeing equal boost pressure. We eliminated cracked intercoolers because both fluid reservoirs were full. There were no audible boost leak noises ect. So we agreed that the boost control module probably failed...........

So I have one on order. Should arrive today. I will keep updated.

Sounds as temperamental as the Taurus' with parts that tend to just fail.

So yeah, it was the boost control solenoid (BCS), and it wasn't the boost control solenoid.

The boost reference lines from the turbos, to the controller, and from the controller to the wastegates are hard plastic. The connectors from those lines to the boost controller are rubber. The connector from the boost side into the controller had split on the back side. So when I went to remove it, it just fell off and started to crumble. So the BCS wasn't getting proper reference, and was limiting boost down.....which is a good thing.

So for 50 cents of vacuum tube, everything is kosher now. The car is ripping again. So back to data logging and messing with tunes.

I was planning on going out and collecting data so I could start getting the baseline tune revision from AMR. But this happened. A truck decided to back into my E63. Fortunately it only broke the headlight.

Unfortunately it broke this headlight.....

Ouch with a sob or two added. That's crazy expensive.
Yeah, the windshield replacement was $2777, and now this $5800......I am glad I am not paying out of pocket.

What is your opinion of a Tesla Model S Plaid? I'm retired, so I'm thinking about one for a garage queen. Thanks, and good luck with the E63.

I like them. The are now entering the 4th year of production, so we should start seeing if they are holding up well or not. These activists against Tesla are helping drive down price. I would consider one for a garage queen, and damn they are fast.

Can't say much different than @SM105K - price is now negotiable.

So I have been working with the tuner for AMR. The AMR 91 octane tune is not as fast as the Dyno Comp 91 octane tune.

The best the Dyno Comp 91 octane tune was below.

The best the AMR 91 Octane tune is below.

The AMR tune is calmer out of the hole which nets a faster sixty foot and 0 to 60 mph. They both run almost identical 1/8 mile times, and then the Dyno Comp tune runs a bigger MPH out the back end.

So I will call this a draw. With less than a tenth difference I am splitting hairs. AMR isn't as aggressive in their tuning in the beginning of the run. This helps the car go faster because traction is better, it probably save some wear and tear on rotational parts, and makes the launch a lot more manageable.

However, the AMR tune drives better, keeps the back of my car cleaner, and makes my garage stink less. Also the AMR tune allows me to datalog, and they are about to release switchable tuning. That means I can switch tunes without having to plug a laptop into my car ect...... Also all of the logs are clean in regards to fuel trims and pressures, Lambda is clean and stable across both banks, and there is zero knock.

So for now....AMR for the win.

Stay tuned for the E30 data.........
