Hey yall,
My PTU went out in my 2016 SHO
non-PP.
The shop wants 5100 for replacement and labor using a PTU direct from Ford (he said the OEM was 2500).
What’s my best option in order to be under or around 3k, Dorman A-premium, used, etc…

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm looking at Dorman replacement turbos and other parts and not so keen on the quality lately. I guess it depends on what you can afford. Keep in mind the car is at the age and not knowing mileage I would say on average that you are due for more expensive repairs with turbos, timing job etc. Make a plan and, if needed, an exit strategy to protect your finances. Don't torpedo your cash and credit situation over a depreciating aging machine.

Yeah, no... I'd look for another shop.

Just replaced the PTU last December. Paid $2800-2900 all said and done.

I was originally quoted $4300 by another shop and swifty asked them to close up the car and let a tow truck take it somewhere else. As soon as I notified them another shop quoted cheaper, they offered to match $2800. No thanks.

Had the car back in a few days, tops.

Thanks for the response! Did you use an aftermarket PTU like Dorman, oem or used?
It’s the only shop in the area that will look at it because the other local garages think it’s too close to the tranny to even wanna look at it.

List price from Ford is a few dollars over $2000. You need the VIN and production date to get the correct part. Labor another $1000-1500.

Unless they recently added to their catalog, be aware that Dorman does NOT make a PTU for the 3.5 GTDI, only the non-turbo.

All dorman made in China - have zero idea where OEM is being made - maybe borg warner.

FordtechMakuloco talks about the Chinese manuf of the ptu in this video.

As far as I recall, it was Ford OEM. Try looking to see if Transmission shops will look at it - that's what I used. Other shops (like my personal favorite) just couldn't handle it due to the labour hours or otherwise.

You're in a big enough population area that-- maybe some sleuthing-- can find an independent mechanic that used to work on Ford vehicles.

I have been digging a bit this morning after reading this thread and smelling propane all the way to work. According to a few Ford websites there is not a difference in Turbo vs. Non Turbo applications. The earlier years yes but it seems around 2015 they simplified the lineup and made them all use the same unit (for non-pp anyway). I am considering a Dorman knockoff because I don't have the 1300 to get it from Ford and ill be doing it on jack stands in my driveway, but as you would expect Amazon claims everything fits everything. still hunting for which one I will ultimately go with but looks like there's some flexibility with this part number.

That might be. I was specifically looking for a 2013 Lincoln MKS EcoBoost and that appears to be mysteriously not included in the fitment list, although the 2013 SHO is....

it also doesnt specify PP SHO or Police Interceptor Sedan so im wondering if the lincoln has a cooler and maybe thats the difference or if has to do with gear ratios. im still digging and ill update what I can find.

Take that list with a grain of salt. The Fusion uses a completely different PTU. The Police Explorer uses a water cooled PTU. There may be other errors.

As near as I can tell, DG1Z-7251-F is the water cooled PTU. DT4Z-7251-G is the standard PTU.
