On my 1989 MTX, I just got everything back together. I had taken the trans off, installed a stage 1 clutch masters clutch and 17lb flywheel.

Just started the car to test drive it, but there seems to be an issue with the trans. When the gear shift is in neutral, the car is actually in reverse (when I let out the clutch the car goes backwards). When I put the shifter into reverse, the car also does go backward.

When I put the shifter into 1st, the car doesn't go forward when letting out the clutch.

The shifter does go into all 5 gears and reverse.

Any ideas? One possibility is that maybe these issues are caused by tightening the pressure plate bolts too tight? I used new ARP pressure plate and flywheel bolts. I tightened more than OEM, because ime that's usually how it goes for ARP bolts.

Otherwise maybe I didn't reassemble the trans correctly in some way.

I may end up taking the car to a transmission shop, since this is my first time working on a trans. Any SHO trans specialists in Los Angeles/Socal area?

Did you remove the shift interlock bolt? if you search on this forum with those three words, it talks about the shifter not being aligned with the gears

Thank you. I just searched and read some of those threads. I think I removed the shift interlock bolt/drain plug when I drained the trans fluid before I removed the trans. So not sure if that is the issue here, but not totally sure.

Atm I'm thinking I'll have to take off the trans and open it up again. Just want to make sure I have an accurate diagnosis beforehand, and good plan to make sure it's done right before I put it back on the car. I didn't check the trans before reinstalling, which I should have done, by spinning the input shaft etc.

The shifter interlock bolt is not really a drain. The shift linkage must have moved while it was out - so the gearbox will need to be cracked open to realign everything. While you have it out drill & tap a true drain plug in the bottom:

Thanks very much for that drain bolt instructions. I'll definitely consider doing that. IIRC I didn't remove the interlocking bolt after I reassembled the trans. And I fully disassembled the internals. So I'm not sure that is the issue. I'm pretty sure I didn't reassemble something correctly.

No problem, Merry Christmas!
