When I was about to buy my SHO, I priced out other fast sedans—the BMW M4 came out to a whopping $150,000 with all the extras. I didn't even price out the super-Audis. I figured that if I'm going to pay $150K for a car, I at least want it to look like a $150K car . . . so that's why the Lotus at "only" $94K.
But like the Ford GT, Shelbys, et.al., you probably can't actually buy the Lotus at MSRP. There's probably waiting lists and outrageous dealer mark-ups. So I guess I'm back to the humble Mustang GT . . . but with every option. The Dark Horse would've ticked a lot of boxes: Exclusivity and rarity, enhanced performance add-ons, etc., all for about $80K—still a lot of money for a car, and within spitting-distance of an exotic (e.g., the single-motor Porsche Taycan or Lotus Emira).

Hmm, might have to go with a 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator Boss 429. Only 2 were built (pretty sure I saw one in the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum many years ago, not sure if it was original) but I'd be okay with a replica, I would be more comfortable driving a replica too. There's a company that makes new "Boss 429" heads that will bolt onto a 385 block so you could build you own (pretty sure you can even bolt them onto a 460, but I think it takes a different manifold), I just need money to build one.

For the final year, 1987, Buick introduced the limited production GNX, for "Grand National Experimental", at $29,900 ($71,317 in 2021 dollars[9]). Made in partnership with McLaren Performance Technologies/ASC, Buick produced only 547 GNs with the interior trim package, that were then sent off to McLaren and upgraded into the Buick GNX. Buick underrated the GNX at 276 hp (280 PS; 206 kW) at 4400 rpm and a very substantial 360 lb⋅ft (488 N⋅m) at 3000 rpm of torque,[20] although actual output is 300 bhp (304 PS; 224 kW) and 420 lb⋅ft (569 N⋅m).[21] This was created to be the "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals".[22]
Changes made included a special Garrett AiResearch T-3 turbocharger with a ceramic-impeller blowing through a more efficient and significantly larger capacity intercooler with a "Cermatel (ceramic-aluminum) coated" pipe connecting the intercooler to the engine. A GNX specific EPROM, low-restriction exhaust with dual mufflers, reprogrammed turbo Hydramatic 200-4R transmission with a custom torque converter and transmission cooler, and unique differential cover/Panhard bar included more of the performance modifications. Exterior styling changes include vents located on each front fender, 16 inch black mesh style wheels with VR-speed rated tires, and deletion of the hood and fender emblems. The interior changes of the GNX included a serial number on the dash plaque and a revised instrument cluster providing Stewart-Warner analog gauges,[23] including an analog turbo boost gauge. The GNX used a unique torque arm that was mounted to a special, GNX only, rear differential cover, for increased traction. The torque arm rear suspension alters the suspension geometry, making the body lift while planting the rear tires down, resulting in increased traction. GNX #001 is the 1986 prototype currently owned by Buick and sometimes makes appearances at car shows around the US

my normal drivers are my SHO a gt350r, a Gallardo Spyder and others but if it’s stop light to stop light you want in a gas car you can’t beat a bmw M5 competition. I hate to say it but bone stock my buddies 2018 M5 makes my full tuned SHO look like a joke Along with all my other cars on the street at least.

I was watching Mecum auctions on TV a few years ago and saw a gorgeous 442 on the carpet which sold for only ~$8,000. I would also like to have one classic muscle-car (but with all modern ignition, etc.); late-60s to early-70s. Probably a 1969 GTX or Road Runner. My dad bought a '69 GTX in dark gray, brand-new—who knew?

I miss my ‘66 Galaxie. Not a 7 litre, just a 500 with a 390. I was the proud owner for 12 years. Was 90% to XL interior conversion when I sold it. I regretted selling it ever since.

So I also say let's do this based on price ranges - fantasy cars vs affordable cars that could be put up against much more expensive cars for times and performance.
I owned and rebuilt ground up a 1979 firetruck red RX7. The 12a and 12b engines had tons of issues with apex seals. So I rebuilt a 13b turbo charged engine, and changed out the differential, mounted wider tires. Small light car 2400lbs that used to eat the muscle cars cause they weighed a ton 2.5+ tons.

Yes, yet another model in the "last gas vehicle to be produced" category, a growing trend I find quite distressing. Mercedes says 2023 is the last model year for the super-sedan (with hybrids to follow). At $177,963 (AutoNation, Torrance, CA), I won't be running to the dealership to grab one anytime soon, but what a car: "[Its] V8 is pumping out 603 thundering horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque," according to Car & Driver.
However, in a superficial beauty contest, I think the SHO holds up quite well and is overall a prettier car to me. The AMG super-car just seems more bloated than sleek. For that kind of money, in addition to performance, I would want the car to look absolutely, ridiculously, amazing.
But yeah, the fast sedans from AMG, BMW, and Audi have always caught my eye, but their six-figure prices tags are just too much to stomach.
