I am pretty sure there are many different rotors out there, high end ones built with much better materials that can be drilled or slotted with no issues. I also believe the use and environment come into play here, daily vs occasional driving, snow and road salt vs clean roads.
I once bought a set of regularly priced drilled rotors for a Mazda 6 and they started to self destruct after their first Winter. Rusted badly around the orifices and started chipping. Lost a lot of braking surface.
Now, what did I do to my SHO?.... got new shoes !
The guys at Discount Tire were hesitant to believe I ran 275's with no rubbing.
