What is a reasonable price to have this done? Local shop quoted just under $1800 and says 12 hours labor. Dealership never even responded to my request for a quote.

Depends on which parts and prices for those.
I'm waiting for their service manager to call me back so that I can inquire about what all that includes and if they are using Motorcraft parts, etc.

R&R on the water pump calls for 13.4 hours. National average labor rate is $75-130. (Call it $100 for easy numbers). $1340 in labor. That leaves $460 for parts, fess, taxes, etc. MSRP on chain, tensioner, guide, water pump, and gasket is $481. No room for tax, fees, fluids. I would guess they are using aftermarket or giving you a fair deal. 12 hours labor already saves you $140.

Parts/labor out the door ran me around $3k a couple weeks ago. Total bill was higher after turbos/lines/seals and a lot of heartache.

Still haven't heard back. I contacted the local Christian Brothers to see what they would charge..... right at $3k. I'm not convinced that I really need to do this imminently. I get the CEL with the code for the cam phaser and a slight rattle at cold start-up. Otherwise the car runs fine. I've been changing the oil at 5k with Motorcraft parts since I bought the car and changed the coolant about 6 months ago, so it's not a maintenance issue.

Just a stupid, stupid design by Ford.

12 hours is about right and you might as well replace every single thing while you're in there. I think I paid just short of $1,900 on mine at an $85/hour shop rate.
Who has the parts list? I know I've seen it on here before.

Amazingly, the other dealer I contacted quoted me $1875 plus tax. I have it scheduled to go in on the 5th.

I got a **** of a deal at $930.00 out the door with a $50.00 tip. That was parts and labor. :eeeeeek:
You must not have replaced either the phasers, plungers or both though if your parts price was that low. My waterpump failed at 91,000 miles and I figured it's a 50/50 chance that either the plungers or phasers go before 182,000 miles so I replaced everything. Too much work doing it all over again.

I replaced everything. The dealer knew what my issue was when I said "let's play a game... I tell you what the car is and you tell me the problem." They all looked at each other and said, "water pump and timing chain." Dealer wholesale pricing for the parts and 600.00 labor from the shop behind me. Ford certified mechanic that has all the Ford tools and did it without pulling the motor. So the amount of time was greatly shortened on the job.

Sounds like you got a helluva deal then. I've been under the impression that anyone with a hoist will opt to drop the engine/subframe from the car and do it on the floor. Why did he opt to do it from the top? That's why I chose to have someone else do mine too.

This is what the dealership replaced on my 2013 SEL in 2019. Cost was $1,871.53 and came with a 3yr 36,000 mile warranty.

He used to work for Ford and did those all week. Paid good money and he figured out the fast way to finish. Explained the whole process to me before he even started so my confidence was high. Came over to my shop at 3 I'm the afternoon on Monday and showed up back at the shop the next morning with the car complete.

Now that's service! I always joke around about there not being any independent mechanics that work overnights.
