Whenever I get my PTU serviced (fluid change), I always get a brief smell of that fluid before it goes away. Pretty sure it's just residual fluid. Been like that since I got it serviced the first time @ around 74k miles or so. I'm at 114k now.

That sounds normal. Always a little dripage onto the down pipe there. Goes away quick.

Is there an aftermarket PTU that is worth the money to replace the OEM or should I just look at replacing with OEM. I have 85K on my 2013PP and I am having all the same issues and have replaced wheel bearings and cv joints, and tie rods. still not fixing the problem. I have also flushed the fluid.

Short answer...No aftermarket one.

Long answer, the one from the last year they used it (2019 with cooler) will bolt up and has all the latest Ford improvements. I'm not certain how the cooler is routed on your current one or if you even have one, but even if you don’t have one, I believe you can convert it or, worst cast, just not use it. The cooler is just a bolted on aluminum cover on the side.

Also, make the service mods (vent tube filling, etc) to it before you install the new one. Easier to do when its off the car.

I've got some drain plug kits I sell to make it a bit easier for maintenance as well. (Shameless.....plug, LOL)

Any Part Numbers PNs for the updated PTU (cooled) and the cooler adapter PN to upgrade it?

Usually you do get gear whine from the PTU before it fails too. If you hear that, you are done.
That’s exactly what happened to my car, at around 90k I believe. I got the fluid drained and refilled x3, but it was too late. The whine started getting louder and louder, at that point you are done indeed.
Ended up paying right around 1800$ to have it replaced :/

Well the...other than the slow grind sorta noise/vibration I get when the wheel is turned all the way and the throttle is pressed to pull forward...no such issues.

No gear whine, no smells, no leaking (except that I over filled it), etc.

I don't mind breaking stuff...but only if its something I can replace with an upgraded version.

Eventually, my turbos will wear out. Which is great. Cuz then I will get upgraded turbos.

It only does it under load. If I already have momentum, I can turn hard all day, even with throttle. At least, until power is pulled by the traction control...

I was driving last night and suddenly the engine light started flashing and then this smell overtook the car from the vents. It started idling rough when I stopped on the side of the highway. No idea what but could it be PTU? Good thing I bought the ext warranty. I've been looking at 4runners, I think now is the time to dump this bad boy as this is the 2nd time the ptu failed.

A p.t.u. failure is not going to cause the engine to run rough. In going to also say with 90% certainty it will not cause a check engine light. A wrench light, maybe if you have a Perf. PKG.

Prolly not blown yet. I drained mine at 120K and was very black and nasty. Added a drain plug with magnetic capabilities. Drained it 3 more times. It's working GREAT now. In my case, after the first drain and fill, I had grease/oil belching out of the PTU onto the driveway. That was because of the top PTU vent being totally clogged. You have to check that. Remove it, and put in the upgraded vent system that won't clogg. After I did that, PTU holds in oil, no belching and not smell. Just nice torque transfers to the rear at launch.

This may be a dumb question, but what sort of venting modification would you be referring to? I just picked up my 2013 Sho and know it's never been serviced. I'm going to change the fluids asap but want to make sure I do as much as I can for Preventative Maintenance.

They are talking about the vent extension mod that is frequently done in order to make it easy to service. There's a ton of threads on it already, no need to beat that horse.
