Turbo Oil Leak Suggestions

I took my 2010 SHO into the shop because I suspected an oil leak from my rear (right) turbo. The shop placed a dye in the oil and had me come back a few days later. They confirmed that the turbo is leaking oil. They suggested replacing the turbo, so I had a few questions.
1) If I have the shop replace the turbo, do you suggest any other parts that would be smart to replace at this time?
2) This might be a pipe dream, but I'm toying with getting both turbos replaced with upgraded ones. I would just be looking for a mild/moderate upgrade. Any suggestions on turbo upgrades? And would this entail having work done to the computer?

Being our computers are built for a turbo car and that they are more sophisticated then older turbo cars it can handle the extra air but it would be highly recommended to get a programmer from a tuner and have them get your car more dialed in

I believe the car should have everything it needs for this upgrade just need the upgraded turbos

I hope anyone else that has actually ventured in this will respond as I have not done so

I have a leaker also, with 80,000 miles.....I found several sites stock OEM Ford turbos for $425.00 each and your core. I may do those and new hoses which are $70 a piece, gaskets I think were $30 and new bolts 20.....after that just oil and labor...

On mine there is just wetness on the turbo itself, cannot determine where it originated. Not enough to drip yet. But I do "use" oil 1-2 quarts every 6,000 miles depend how hard I beat her. Never smoked not even on start up...

No smoke usually means turbo feed lines. Clean up the area with brake cleaner and see if the issue returns. Also sounds like the valve cover/pcv valve need updating.

Great question. I'm not certain which one is leaking on my car. The shop made it sound like the turbo seal, but I'm not convinced yet (or maybe I'm in denial because I don't want to spend the money on a new turbo). I don't see white smoke coming from the car, so it's possible it's the oil lines as you suggested. Would you advise getting the oil lines replaced as a first step as opposed to the turbo? Thanks.
Is the leak in the turbo seals or the oil lines feeding the turbo?

If you do not see any smoke from the exhaust under any condition, then it is worth looking at the oil feed lines first. The other usual way to lose oil is through the PCV system, and it either pooling in the intercooler or getting combusted.

I do not have a labor estimate for doing the oil feed lines only, but generally it is advisable to clean the suspect area with brake cleaner and then monitor for seepage. You can also pull the intake pipng off the turbo, and if you see pooling oil, that is a confirmation that the turbo seals are bad. Fairly easy diagnostics for a shop.

If you DO decide to change the turbos, change the feed lines as well.

Turbo update: I took the SHO in for a second opinion and the dealer was able to pinpoint the oil leak. The leak was from a feed line as you suspected. This is considerably cheaper than the turbo replacement. Thanks for the advice and saving me a bunch of money!

Glad to hear, keep us updated.

The splash shield is ecofriendly in many ways, but also prevents early warning signs of leaks from manifesting visually. Keeping a watch out for pesky smells is a necessary survival tool.

When i had my old engine out, i noticed the metal oil lines to oil pan were beyond rusted. I had them replaced with the new turbos and engine though. Maybe another place to check for future leaks.

Were you seeing white smoke from your exhaust in the beginning?

I didn't see white smoke. The mechanic at the dealer said that if it were truly the turbo gone bad (or a major oil leak), I would have noticed a performance decline and potentially white smoke.
Were you seeing white smoke from your exhaust in the beginning?

Hmm. If anything, mine is running better than a week ago now that its colder.
