so i get a message in the inbox on this forum. guy says it 'looks like you got my old car' (2014 pp). he must have been looking through the posts and saw my post complaining about the dealer where i bought it. he wasn't member till that day he wrote me. asks me if we can meet up so he can pull the tune out of the car and return it to stock so he can use the device on another car. i told him i like the way it runs now and am not willing to do that. i then asked if he would give me the info on the tune. i would love to know the detail's of the tune. not to mention the maintenance or lack of. he has not replied its been a few days i don't think he will. very frustrating on my part and his i guess. no wonder i smoked a 5.0 one day.i was planning having all the fluids changed anyway.

You should buy the tuner and the tune from him. That way you get the stock tune and a tuner for your car...and he can to buy a tuner for his next car.

BE CAREFUL. I don't trust anyone at this point, and any rando that would suddenly join a forum just to contact you is a bit weird from the get-go. How the heck did he know "his car" was bought, after you posting about it on a forum he's not a member of? What's he doing, googling the dealer name to see who got it?

However, I would ask if you can buy the tuner ;) And then still be very careful ...

I would bring it out public so the we can all see. Transparency helps everything.

he was willing to give me the key if i let him pull the tune also said he has a set of weather tech mats he would throw in. i wouldn't buy the device not knowing if it would be the right one.

The only way you'll know is if you unmarry the tuner. And then you'll have no tune because it will be returned to stock. So you'll have to buy the tuner ;)

Either way, I'd still be careful, because all this can be a story... a big big story... until you let him try his key with the car.

And wait, you didn't get two key fobs with the car from a dealer?

i did only because i made it part of the deal. dealer said they only got one. so that checks out. anyway i want no part of buying his tuner. would have been nice to know whats what as far as the type of tune.

the only advantage would be if you had to have your stock tune for emissions..... but most tuners can give you a 2 bar tune if you have a 3 bar in it now.

Yeah, the big advantage would be to have the stock tune available.

I wonder, is there a 3-bar MAP in it now?

I'm with the crowd, public meet and check the key. And if you like the tune make an offer. I'd rather let him restore it to factory and buy my own tune. That way you'll know exactly what you have and by who. Plus if it's an LMS tune they have newer Mycal devices which are much better then the old ones. And if you ever have to get dealership work and they need to put it to stock, you're kind of screwed without the device. So compromise if possible.

Most of the times the tuner becomes "married" to the vehicle after ~5 file transfers so most likely that is the case here. He would have to pay to have it "un-married" (should we say divorced? ;)).
When I bought my SHO I got the tuner, the factory 2 BAR map sensor and thermostat, all I needed to revert the vehicle back to stock if I wanted to. I also got 3 key fobs.
The fact that the car being tuned was not disclosed to you by the dealer is a serious omission and you should hold them accountable for that.
You want to have the tuner with the stock file, you also want to get another key fob. You should contact the guy and buy those from him if for a really discounted price, they are worth nothing to him. If he doesn't comply I'd at least get the other key fob's removed from your vehicle's memory.

I'd look in the forum classifieds and see if they're any for sale and go from there. I think the older model is probably worth 100 bucks depending on condition. If it's an LMS Mycal device. Their devices only work with their tunes.

As far as a stock file, I don't know. I know it's copied to the original device that uploaded the tune. I don't know if each vehicle has it's own strategy code.

Hopefully someone else will chime in with more knowledge.

Stock files are available (for purchase/loading) and strategy codes are not often specific to an individual vehicle, but rather a bank, or grouping of vehicles.

My biggest concern in reading through this, is the fact that the previous owner has (what is believed, or reported to be) a working key to the current owner's car.

That's a big no no, and the fact it was kept, and now this previous owner monitored the sale of the car, and reached out to the current owner immediately after purchase, is a tad bit disconcerting.

I would be HIGHLY SUSPICIOUS of any/all of this personally.

Bingo, I would listen to BPD. He has made a living dealing with suspicious people.
