OK, so odd post here but I have to wonder if there's a weird connection here! My Blind Spot (BLIS) doesn't work all of a sudden. I was driving home yesterday and started to switch lanes, put my turn signal on first, checked mirrors and then started to move over and holy ****, there's a brand new Volvo hanging out in my blind spot! My car didn't beep at me or anything. Luckily I swerved back and he slammed his brakes on.
I have my side mirrors adjusted properly so that I see the other lanes and looks into the actual blind spot. My mirrors are not directed along the side of my car like most people - they're done correctly, but this Volvo had to be in just the most perfect/unfortunate spot and I didn't see him. To be honest I don't recall if the yellow light was on in my passenger mirror.
Now, speaking of the yellow lights in the rear mirrors - anyone notice that when loading the LMS tunes, both these lights come on and stay on? Does the LMS tune somehow mess up the BLIS and possibly turn it off? I went into the dashboard settings under "Vehicle," and all 3 boxes are checked such as the rear/reverse sensor, cross traffic, and blind spot - they're on and all of them work/beep, etc except the Blind Spot!
Anyone else have this issue or even noticed?

Glad to hear you emerged safe & sound!

Any codes?

  • Possible Sources
  • Wiring, terminals and connectors
  • BLIS® system is not configured on with the scan tool
  • Vehicle speed signal
  • BCM
  • IPC
  • PAM
  • SOD-R
  • SOD-L
I am thinking the Side Obstacle Detection module - LEFT since pass side might be working? I believe it sits in the rear fender area, accessible through the splash shield.

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®)

BLIS® becomes active the first time the transmission is placed in DRIVE (D) after starting the engine and driving forward at a vehicle speed greater than 4.8 kmh (3 mph). Upon that initial sequence, BLIS® remains active for all speeds including 0 kmh (0 mph). BLIS® is also active if the transmission is placed in NEUTRAL (N). If the transmission is selected out of DRIVE (D) or NEUTRAL (N), the system has entered the CTA mode. When the transmission is shifted back into DRIVE (D), BLIS® is activated once the vehicle is driven above 4.8 kmh (3 mph).

BLIS® can trigger an alert for vehicles that enter the blind zone from the rear or merge into the blind zone from the side. The exterior mirror BLIS® / CTA amber LED illuminates in the right and/or left exterior mirror. For vehicles that are being passed or enter the blind zone from the front, the system can trigger an alert only after the vehicle is present in the blind zone for more than 2 seconds. For vehicles that pass through the blind zone quickly, typically less than 2 seconds, BLIS® cannot trigger an alert.

For correct operation of BLIS® , the rear side bumper cover should be free of obstructions such as a large build up of mud, snow or ice. Small build up of debris and materials does not hinder the operation of the system. There should be no bumper stickers of any type placed in this area of the bumper cover.

NOTE: BLIS® does not normally detect parked vehicles, pedestrians or objects such as fences, guard rails, trees, etc. BLIS® does not provide any additional warning when the turn signal is activated.

Due to the nature of radar technology, false alerts and missed vehicles or objects (referred to as targets) may occur under certain circumstances. False alerts occur when the LED illuminates with no target present. False alerts up to 3% (3 out of 100 targets) is normal operation. Circumstances that cause false alerts are:
  • freeway dividers
  • concrete walls
  • fencing
  • sharp turns around a pole or building
  • coming to a stop with a vehicle directly behind and very close
False alerts are temporary and self-correct.

Missed targets occur when a target is present and the LED does not illuminate. Missed targets up to 1% (1 out of 100 targets) are normal operation. Circumstances that cause missed targets are:

  • debris build up on the rear bumper sides
  • certain maneuvering of vehicles entering and exiting the blind zone
  • vehicles passing through the blind zone at high rates of speed
  • severe weather conditions
  • when several vehicles forming a convoy pass through the blind zone

I have never had a beep from BLIS only from reverse sensors and cross traffic. BLIS is just the amber led in the mirror.

Flashing the tune has never made my BLIS lights come on or impact them in any way. On my Lincolns, the lights come on solid if a car is in the blind spot and blink if I turn on a turn signal while a car is there.

My 2016 has a wierd BLIS detection area that really isn' in my blind spot. I have my side view mirror set up so they continue to view what is left and right on my interior rear view. If there is a car along side me. The BLIS may not catch it. It has to be back and behind. I think the owners manual shows a picture of the appoximate detection area.

Thanks, but BLIS does make an audible tone. The very first week I owned my car (no tune yet) an SUV was merging behind me and got real close to me to bully his way into the lane between me and car behind and my blis had a constant audible tone going off the entire time he was on side of my butt.

And this is why I created the thread because the Volvo ended up exactly where that SUV was but didn't sound the alert - tone.

My 2013 SHO definitely doesn't make any noise - just a light in the mirror. Wonder if they updated it at some point to make noise. I wish mine would when I activated a turn signal and someone was in my blind spot because that light is easy to miss.

Exactly, and I would bet I missed that light! Every car I've ever owned with a blis type system makes a tone alert, my wife's cars such as Hyundai Tucson, Santa Fe, 2017 Durango gt... and I'll swear forever my 14 SHO made a tone that one time. I wonder if like SHOdded noted it has to be longer than 2 seconds, which can seem an eternity when driving. Or how many times is a car that long in a blind spot?

Appreciate everyone's replies!!

Is your car a performance pack, or a technology pack? I'm not aware of BLIS making a noise and just read through the w.s.m. again but Cross Traffic Alert will make noise.

I know some active parking systems allow the front parki g aid operation at certain speeds but it seem that's a no go other reading the 2016 w.s.m.

I don't doubt you. It' your car but it makes me think there is a fault.

Shrugs sholders.

No noise on my 2013, just the light in the mirror. I am going to have to turn down the sensitivity of the crash warning, or whatever it's called. Dang thing starts screaming any time I am coming up on traffic turning and I'm not slowing down.

I could be wrong but I don't think any Ford BLIS system is designed to makes a noise. They do not on Lincolns. However, if a car pulls in extremely close behind you, the rear parking aid could make a noise....just like if you are backing up and getting too close to an obstacle. My manual says that only happens when you are in reverse, though. Double shoulder shrug....
