3.0 mtx crank washer/shim

Has anyone had any issues with the shim piece that fits over the crank snout right after the timing sprocket, mine has play and is causing it to rattle and tick, just replaced timing gear and key.

No, I would think it would be sandwiched in place when the harmonic balancer was torqued. Do you have it in the correct way?

sounds like the udp was not made right, because all the crank pulleys that I have seen (many) all hang over the end of the crank at least 1/4" when on all the way. That way you know they get tight when the bolt is tightened.

I would send it back.
You should not need any extra washers.

We never had a problem or issue with the UDPs in the past, but I am going to take detailed measurements and perform a fit check this weekend to see if something changed. I will report back with what I find.

I checked my UDP and a new UDP, and both of them had a slight overhang on the crankshaft. It is not quite as much overhang as a factory pulley, but it is still more than adequate to get good clamping from the crank bolt. Since we have never seen an issue like this before, I wonder if there might be something else going on with the original poster's situation. If the crank sprocket or the sprocket washer were damaged or missing, it could cause the UDP to look like it is coming up short since the overall "stack" is shorter.

Glad to hear the OP got it fixed and is back on the road.

So I shimmed my udp and it took.care of the sound
I have the same jingle sound coming from behind the, SHOsource, UDP on my 1990 MTX. Thanks for sharing your solution.
I just figured I had done something wrong. I have torqued the crank bolt as much as I dare. I will check to make sure the udp is flush with the end of the Crankshaft. If it is I'll look at the shim option.
I don't think I left any washers out, but you never know. I'll check that too.
I had just replaced the seals, CPS, UDP and belts. It was running great. DEQ couldn't believe how clean it's exhaust is. On the way home from DEQ I romped on it in 2nd gear and just as I shifted to 3rd,,, it died. No noise, just died and won't start or fire or anything. AAA towed me home. I'll get things tightened up on the crankshaft. Maybe the timing belt's crankshaft gear slid over just enough to lose contact with the crank position sensor. I know that's reaching, but I would love to get lucky on this one.

I did get lucky on this one. I hadn't tightened the Crank bolt enough to bring the UDP flush with the end of the crank shaft. This allowed the timing belt gear to slid out just enough to lose magnetic contact with the crank position sensor. I tightened it up and it runs great.
