I was on a short overnight road trip (up to starved rock) the weekend before last, and about half way there with the A/C on all the vents start blowing hot air. I tried shutting the system off and turning back on and no luck. The next morning I come out and start the car and it barley wants to start, but finally dose. I thought for sure that it was time to replace the battery as I have read about a few other 2010 needing batteries. When I got back home I tested the battery and everything checked out fine and the car was starting with no problems until the next morning after sitting all night.
Based on this and no A/C I assumed it must be a compressor problem and made an appointment with my local ford dealer in Frankfort and dropped the car off on Wednesday evening. I get a call Thursday around 5:30 saying they don’t yet have a definitive cause and want to keep the car another day, in other words they haven’t looked at it yet (this dealer is always slow). Finally on Friday my rep calls and confirms that the compressor had completely failed, and as a result there is metal in the system. He quotes me $3,525.50 plus tax!!! To repair the system which included A/C dye, Compressor, Condenser, Evaporator, Lines with mufflers, Accumulator, O-rings, Evac and recharge. I have a few cars in my family now that cost less than that. My rep recommends I call ford customer service to see if there is anything they can do to help as I am out of warranty at 41K miles. As expected they say there is nothing they can do and would open a case and record the information and notify me if anything comes up. I ask them about any good faith help with the repair and explain that I have four fords in my house hold now and that I have been a long time ford driver and supporter often promoting ford to many friends and family considering foreign cars. They inform me that any good will in helping with the repair would have to come from the dealer. After reporting this back to the dealer they inform me that they cannot help as they are currently depleted on their customer assistance funds, however they do offer to sharpen their pencil and lower there estimate by approximately $800. This is still more then I am willing to spend at this time so I pick up the car.
The big problem besides no A/C was the hard starts in the morning. I figured this must be caused by the car trying to engage the compressor right as the engine fires at start up (even with the system switched off). So this weekend I climb under there to check things out and of course the skid plate / underbody shield was not reinstalled correctly one corner was hanging off (again expected from this dealer). I ended up unplugging and tapeing up the connector to the compressor and this took care of the hard start issue. Now I can take my time to research this to repair myself and start watching the junk yards for parts.
The worst part was on Sunday when I had to ask my girlfriend to drive her 05 Santa Fe with 133k to the Toby Keith concert so we could have air. I usually give her a hard time about driving a foreign car. I no longer have an argument for buying a ford as my $45,670 (sticker) three year old car with 41K requires over 3K in repairs. Not that I had all that much of a leg to stand on with my ongoing trans bump that the dealer cannot duplicate, my no heat at idle, humming sound on shifts, drivers window squeal, occasional power loss, noise from under dash, and the seats confusing heating and cooling and always inflating the lumbar. It is times like these that really make me question my loyalty toward American cars and ford.
