I know the oil light flickering is usually a good sign of rod bearings, but after searching the forums i havnt seen anyone having overheating problems at the same time.

I was in traffic, shifting from first to neutral and we were only moving a few feet at a time, i noticed the oil light flickering while in neutral and the temp gauge soaring pretty close to the red, before this happened I put the car into first and felt a little clunk and it felt like the clutch slipped and then caught up..once traffic cleared up and we were moving the temp went back to normal and no more oil light the whole time I drive about 30miles. Came into traffic again and the same thing started happening, oil pressure light flickering and overheating then made it the rest of the way home 50 miles later no problems. No more over heating.

Is this rod bearings or something else? Im going to remove the oil pan Monday just to make sure.

The car getting hot is causing what ever oil you have in there to get thin. Solve the getting hot issue before addressing the oil light IMO.

The weird thing is the car never runs hot until that traffic. The temp gauge always stays in the normal range usually never getting past the M in normal.

Is your fan turning on? What's your coolant level?

If your fan isn't turning on when it is supposed to that will make the car overheat in stop and go traffic, or other low speed situations.

If the fan is not working, it may be the motor itself, the ECT sensor, or the CCRM...

i pulled over at a rest stop and checked the coolant level and it was good. This is the first time the car ever got this hot. i have been in stop and go traffic before with no problem. The last time I knew the fan was working was a few weeks ago, not too sure if anythings changed since then.

My wife just told me when she was driving the car last week she noticed the red oil light flickering during idle when she was at a stop in neutral after she drove about 70 miles and close to her destination

Fix the overheating issue and change the rod bearings if you're unsure. Without an actual oil pressure gauge to tell you if the sender is lying, you might be better off swapping the bearings.

Im glad I decided to stop driving the car when I got home. I checked all of the rod bearings and they are all showing copper. Not sure which cylinder it is, but the one right next to the flywheel where the starter goes, is that #6 or #1? The bearing wore down so much it started to lose material. Luckily my crank isnt scratched at all. it doesnt look scratched and I cant feel anything. Also I usually change the oil myself but the last time I didnt, when I drained the oil pan there were 6 quarts of oil in it.

Heres the pics I have so far. The worse one with a chunk missing is from the top. Does anyone know what kind of bearings these are? I took a pic of the stamping

Damn good thing you went and did them. But still you need to figure out the over heating. Cause this may happen again if its thinning out your oil too much. What grades are you using?

Ive been using mobile semi-synthetic 5w-30. Im going to see what happens with the fan when I have everything back together. I didnt get the new bearings yet so the car is just sitting there until I do. I Also snapped the stud that comes out of the exhaust that screws the y-pipe to the manifold/header, so I have to spray that down and screw it out and get a new one

Wow. Good thing you did them now. Not much life left in those.

I would recommend the www.shonutperformance.com Y-pipe studs. They are stainless and will give you no future problems.

Let us know how it all goes back together and if the fan is / is not working.

yeah, you were definitely on borrowed time with those bearings. Good thing you pulled them out because you were very close to a spun bearing.

Thanks for the info. I just placed an order with RCM Auto. It was $26 cheaper for the same item then the ones at Shosource and they are in the same state as I am so I should receive it quicker.

Should being the operative term. Good luck.

Doug

I thought they were in NY also for some reason but they are in P.A. The USPS tracking number they sent me says it is in transit and should arrive tomorrow. I cant wait to get this fixed, it sucks not having a car even though its been less than a week.
