Hi all.

A couple of weeks ago, I changed the engine in my daughters 93 3.2. After a brief shakedown I found that the cooling fans would not start on their own (fans will run on A/C). I removed the ECM coolant sensor from the removed engine and intalled it into this one but it did not solve it. I know that I can plug into the ECM and see what's happening but does someone have a possible shortcut to solving this?

Thanks, Joe

are there any codes?

is the 'new' engine also a 93? did you put the original engine wire harness on the 'new' engine or use the 'new' one?

Will the fans come on when you do the "paper clip" self test?

Which coolant sensor did you swap out? there are 2 in the vicinity of the throttle body. One behind and below the throttle body, and one between the coilpack and the water neck.

First of all how warm is the engine getting before you decide there not coming on. The coolant gauge will need to get up higher than most people think before the fans come on.

1 - No codes, that's clear.
2 - No paper clip test and the 2 wire (ECM) sensor
3 - it gets pretty darn high, enough to worry me (not changing that damn thing again!)

I'll hook up my OTC scanner to it tonight just to see if the sensor is being read by the ECM

My thoughts this weekend were toward the fan relay. Is it a 2 pole input (one for the AC and the second for the cooling temp)?

Its not uncommon for the gauge to read over 3/4 the way or more to the H before the fans will turn on. Lots of people like to waist there time and $ on the same issue because they thing its getting too hot but its not. If you do have the scan tool on the etc temp will need to get around 215deg before your going to see the fan turn on.

My plans are to put the OTC monitor on it and see what the ECM is reading. I'll then be able to make a better guess. That and I'll be able to prove the sensor works. Thanks for the temp input (215). I'll look for that.

Ishodu, perfect call! The gauge on the dash got up to the L as I was watching my Monitor which stayed on 209 for the longest time but as soon as the ECM said 215, low fan came on.

Thanks all for the help, Joe

Glad it worked. It sounds like something may be messed up with your temp gauge in the car. I havent watched to see where exactly mine kick on, but I believe it is somewhere in the "MA" area. I think I remember reading that the temp range of the dash gauge is very small though.
