This may lead to some laughs and a few omg's. I have a 1995 taurus gl and a 1994 Taurus SHO. Can I just pull the motor and tranny cage from the sho and put it into the gl? Along with the wiring harness and such of course. This would be relatively not too tough a job, correct?
The reason for pulling the sho apart, is the sho is twisted up, unibody wise from an accident and prob never be road worthy.

If the SHO is an automatic, then yes it would be pretty easy. You would need the SHO ECM, wiring harness, coolant tank, washer fluid tank, power steering reservoir, fans, ATX trans cooler, etc.

with the money and time you would invest you could buy a decent sho, and have something that may be worth something someday

It could be done but i wouldn't do it. I would buy another sho and keep the other one as a parts car.

Yeah, b-cuz the SHO, for what it's worth, has many heavy duty components that a GL wouldn't. I have both a SHO and a GL, so I know about that.

To get it all functional you'd need to tear out the entire wiring assembly/all the looms.

Imagine the torque steer when you punch a GL with SHO horsepower!

having played this game, I know its a little more complicated than it seems. (your proposal is basically the same as converting a wagon to a SHO.)

you will need the entire subframe with engine and transmission from the SHO, along with the pcm, all of the underhood wiring harnesses, and the dash and the dash wiring harness.

then you need to decide if you will keep the column shifter or use the buckets and the console shifter. if you use the column shifter, you will need the bracket that attaches the shift cable to the trans from the GL to mount on the SHO trans. if you do this, you will only be able to shift into drive (not 2 or 1) and you will lose the ability to lock out overdrive unless you wire up a momentary switch somewhere to allow this.

if you use the console shift, you will need all the console and shifter and related parts from the SHO as well as the above.

then you need to deal with the fact that the wiring on the 94 is different from a 95. there are 2 places where this will bite you -
1. in the driver's kick panel next to the parking brake are 5 large connectors. 2 of these are populated differently between 94 and 95, and you will be required to make an adapter harness to get that straightened out.
2. at the passenger rear of the engine compartment, the connector for the rear abs sensors is different between 94 and 95, and again you will be required to make an adapter harness to get that straightened out.

that is pretty much it.

btw, turbo79, the torque steer will be exactly like a SHO, because the suspension and drive system at that point will be the SHO.

Thanks for the info everyone. I think it can be done but my funds are low, and I know thats a bad thing for a SHO owner. It's always been my dream car to own an SHO and I finally got one. Just didnt realize the true shape it was in until I got into going over it and fixing it.

Been there, done that, took the GL pretty much down to the shell, and swapped over everything from the SHO, over to the GL body, worked fine till she was written off 6 months after

Front LCA's, brakes, sway bars, I think the strut mounts on a sho are more stiff. There's a lot.

How are the front LCA's any better?
Sways on that 94/95 SHO ARE SLO bars.
Brakes? Meh...
Strut mounts are nothing special between the two... If not the same.

Unless the GL body is in GLORIOUS like new shape , Its still gonna be cheaper to buy a sho - ready made.

A zero budget for a swap like this is a no-no , you will want to change some gaskets , rod bearings , stuff that WILL go wrong.

SHO LCA's have a larger ball assembly. Part numbers are different as well.

Minor difference in the brakes.

I agree on the sway-bars, unless you were a lucky one with a larger than 22MM rear bar.

Waste of time IMO unless you plan on going all out and making one like Phoenix or St.Louis SHO's. Those are well done, took alot of hard work and lots of $$$ and they came out great...but just to take a regular old Taurus and make a SHO out of it with spare parts; nah.

I'll have to take a closer look, but the knuckles on my SHO are off of a SLO and it's the same... I assume[d] the ball joints are the same.

SHO LCA's are slightly larger but are interchangeable with SLO units so the difference is negligible at best.
Stock gen 1/2 SHO/SLO brakes are smaller than my Civic stock brakes.
Sway bars,I'll admit a difference there.

Lets hear more about the twisted up part on the original SHO.
Rubydist and Phoenix are not laughing, so you have the green light concerning the project. It would be too complicated for me to consider, but that is just me.
Good luck.... and I mean that, as I think it would be a good thing. I admire your nerve.
