Crank Bolt Won't Budge..95 3.2 auto trans

I have tried a 600 ft/lb impact and still no budge on a crank bolt so I can pull off my lower pulley. Is there a good way to hold the motor from turning so I can put a cheater bar on it? Thought about pulling the starter. Isn't there an inspection plate for flywheel or converter? Thanks

Put a breaker bar on the bolt and bump the starter.

Use forum search to read about the starter bump method. Your 600 ft-lb impact won't make anywhere near that torque unless you have a heck of a lot better air system than most folks have at home.

If you have a 600ft-lb impact you will likely need an air compressor that can supply 30+ CFM to give your gun its rated torque. The only type of compressors capable of supplying that amount of continuous air are the commercial grade ones found in most shops.


However, if you can get your hands on a 3/4" drive impact gun you might have better luck. They can deliver higher torque with lower CFM consumption. I just eneded up going to a shop that rebuilt heads and slipped them $20 to let me use their 3/4" impact gun and an air line run out the side door. Once I got it cracked loose, I re-tightened it to 100ft-lbs and brought it home to work on it.

If all else fails other forum members have used a hole-saw to cut the flanged edge of the bolt off; the bolt comes off by hand after.

You have gone this far, so I am guessing your going to change the serp. belt. I had the same problem with mine as with all of us here. Take the old belt and wrap it arond the crank pulley 2 times, then take it around the a/c pulley and up to the Alt. Go arond the Alt pulley and back down to the a/c but this time go under the belt that is already there. Doing this will cause the belt to tighten on itself while you take everything you got to push the breaker bar and the 3 ft bar attached to it to break the bolt loose. I wish I had take picts while I did it but I too was at a point of frustration and was trying everything I could think of to get the damn bolt out. But as we all know every situation is different and this way worked for me, also be prepared for when the bolt "POPS" and belive me it well make some noise, dont faceplant into the engine.

Starter bump method. This is how I got mine loose the first time. Snug the breaker bar against the frame before bumping the starter. It seemed scary to me that maybe you could damage something like the flywheel but I've never heard of anyone damaging anything.

I've heard Bob Gervais can remove a crank bolt with no tools. Spins them off with his index finger and thumb.
