Probably less than the cost of a new engine or transaxle or rear PTU/ diff.

How do you swap an ECM? Are they plug and play or do they need to be reconfigured after each swap?

Usually it's a plug and play component, but to be honest I can't speak towards which PCM's are compatible with each other. If it were me, I would buy a 2nd PCM, tune that PCM, and if shit hits the fan, reinstall the original PCM, and then take it in to get looked at.

Not sure about ford, but with Chrysler it's a pretty simple swap. It's usually just a harness or two. However the computers had to be programmed with the vehicles vin in order for it to work. If the vin wasnt correct the car would die after a couple seconds.

With the ECM in my G8's, I can switch them in about 2 min! They are VIN specific and have to be re-programmed to work with the correct VIN.

Not even sure where our EB engine's ECM is located.... any answers?

The ECM for my STS-V is VIN specific but only affects the remote start capability. 10 min swap for me.

PCM swapping was talked about a long time ago on here too. You need to have it programmed to the VIN for one. Then, where are you going to find one? They will become readily available soon at salvage yards, Ebay, etc., but try going to your parts counter and order one from Ford and see if that doesn't raise some eyebrows. Not including, Ford guys are reading these forums also. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for modding vehicles, but don't think you're gonna slide one past Ford. They have some major legal teams that wouldn't have a problem backing them up on something like this plus alot more money to fight it out.

The big flag would be the missing codes that should have been thrown when the big melt down happened. Your OEM PCM will not have any record of the fault/breakage. That would be a big flag.

GM ECM's serve many of their vehicles, so are readily available.

Don't know whether EcoBoost ECM is specific to that engine, or a standard Ford part.

Will attempt to find out.

you'll also have to have a second set of keys for the new PCM.

Also, if you have engine issues, like you blow up the motor, swapping the old ECM back in will show no KAM history.

I've been there and done that, had warranty claims denied in the past by the blue oval and my warranty voided due to a tune.

The warranty is still valid as long as the tuning does not cause the failure, so what's the problem?

You want Ford to pay for a new engine even if the failure is directly caused by the tune? No wonder cars cost so much, when they have to build the price of sponsoring tuners into the MSRP.

To be clear, I have nothing against running a tune or chipping the car at all, I think it's great. What I do have a problem with is people who think it's Ford's responsibility to fix the car when something pops. You tune, you take the risks on as well. Don't like it? Stay stock till the warranty runs out.

Which is why I said thats what they make junk yards for. I put a Kenne Bell on my 2005 Mustang GT in Apr 2008, third gear in the auto went out the second trip to the strip. I just bought an 18,000 mile tranny from the junk yard, with warranty;) for $690.00. You gotta pay to play. In fact the junk yard doesnt ask if you have a tune or not. 12 month 12,000 warranty.

A second (new) ECM for our EcoBoost engines can be purchased for $650. ($550. + $100. core charge)

I don't believe it would affect the keys as different ECM's in my G8's can be used with the
same keys. A used GM ECM that is VIN matched with your car does need a key re-learn,
but that takes about 30 min. Never used VIN matched GM ECM's need no key-re-learn, but do need a crank learn.

Ford ECM's may be different however....

Well I just flashed my ECU with the Stage 2 along with the CAI and all I can say is holy snot. This thing pulls and sounds like a darn beast. I'll have to see how she does for my daily grind now.

Maybe it was just me, but the AIRAID intake was a pain in the ass with the fitment in my SHO....I followed the instructions to the letter, but FML the clamps were a pain in the ass to get over the rubber on all 3 occasions!
