Anyone figure out why 93 autos burn through starters like they do?

FINALLY got my 93 back from my dad's in central Kansas and the damn thing won't start AGAIN. All else checks out, so I am jacking it up tomorrow and taking the damn near new starter to NAPA to be tested and returned for a new one.

Anyone figure out what the deal is with these damn starters? Are they not getting enough power and burn out faster? Or are they getting overheated by the engine? Oil drip a problem on oil changes? I mean what is the deal with these damn starters?!

Nothings better than an OEM starter. Get it rebuilt. It will last much longer than some of these so-called "remanufactured" starters. I have my original starter on my 185,000 mi. ATX. By the way, I'm in Kansas too.

Oh seen that you a 91 mtx, the 93 atx's are notorious for burning through starters.

BTW it has been 5 yrs since I have done anything to this car, the starter solenoid is on the starter right? It will all come crashing back to me.. but until then..

Yea the solenoid is on the starter. I will be in KC for 6 weeks starting Sept. 26 to go to JCCC. Yea, I have a 94 ATX too.

RockAuto my friend. Keep an eye on their close-outs. I bought a Motorcraft one for my 90 for about 53 bucks. I think it was a reman but it was still a Ford one. Kept it on-hand in case I needed it--sure enough about a month later, mine died and I had it ready to go in.

Keep oil from dumping on it during oil changes. Even still, these '93 ATX's eat starters. I'm on my third in 2 years (not a bad record actually) and the car has just within the past two weeks been getting difficult to start. I should invest in a quality rebuild but the damn free ones from the lifetime warranty at vatozone are just... well... free!

93 ATXs burn them out quicker than all the rest?

Maybe it just seems that way since there are so many '93s? It's like asking why they go out more on green ones. There are just more out there.

There are 2 different versions of the SHO starter, but it will work on both MTX and ATX cars. And of course, gen 1 and gen 2 starters are different. Gen 1s have the solenoid on the fender, Gen 2s have the solenoid on the starter.
