I could really use some help! AS of today my 91 MTX is out of commission, and as my only car I'm in a bind. I'm really broke and can't afford a rental and need this car to get to work on Monday.

For the last month or so I've been hearing rattling/grinding from the tranny with the clutch pushed in, getting progressively worse. Today I was driving, accelerating in 3rd to about 50 then shifted to 5th to cruise. As soon as I let the clutch out there was some grinding/banging and it started slowing. I pushed in the clutch and was able to coast off the road and park.

After I parked, I put it back in first and tentatively tried to get rolling. It seemed to work fine so I went through 2-4 in the parking lot and seemed ok. I went back into first to leave, drove a few feet then my tire locked and screeched like I had slammed on the brakes.

With the shifter in neutral and the car shut off, I was able to push it out of the way. However if I started it and tried to let out the clutch while in neutral or any other gear it would stall, no matter how much gas I gave it. It also takes a lot of effort to get into gear.

Any ideas? If it's clutch related no biggy, I'll change it over the weekend. If it's the tranny I better start car shopping.

Thanks!

I didn't see that it was leaking more than usual. It always had a little drip. It's a friends house so I can't look at right this sec either.

With that kind of damage you HAVE to pull the trans . Look up the guide on SHO phoniex . If this is your first time doing the job you are not going to have a car to drive on monday. At a minimuim id say you need a

new clutch kit $200+ for stock replacment
grind flywheel $20
more then likely a new MTX. ( drain the fluid in the mtx and look for metal shavings with a magnet. If there is alot get another MTX )
At least a couple of days to do the job , Id pull the motor from the top.

I see your in idaho If you cant find a trans local I have a good MTX in oregon.

If it's a tranny it's not worth fixing, it's a 200k clunker in pretty rough shape. Time to start car shopping.

I would not move that sho another inch. You risk punching a diff pin through the tranny case. This will completely destroy the scarce mtx4. Don't do it! Pull the tranny and fix it.

I'm not sure it's worth fixing. It has 200k, the paint is ruined (peeling clear), the PS rack is shot, it needs tires and a windshield, and now a clutch and tranny.

The car may not be worth fixing, but if the tranny case is not blown, it is worth saving, somebody will want/need it if you don't use it for another SHO.

A lot of SHO's need at least half the things on your list, so get started on the fix.
It is worth fixing. Your steering rack will be easy to swap after you pull the motor / tranny, and any car you buy will probably need tires and a windshield.. so why not put them on your car that you already own?
Go over the threads on this forum for the best places to buy the things you need.

OK, I decided to fix it. But I'm going to take my time so I bought another car today to use in the mean time. 01 Taurus for $350 lol. 170k and a dented drivers door, other than that only needs a A/C compressor to be drivable, it's seized, I can have that swapped out tomorrow and be good to go.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll be searching for info on that tranny soon enough, first I have a 4.0L to replace in my GF's Explorer.

Good choices on everything!
I am not sure, but I think there is still a remote possibility that your transmission can be fixed.

I'd pull the motor&trans and find out what is broken . Take the mtx case apart and inspect your trans . If you only had catastrophic clutch failure you could be back on the road for a 3-4 hundred dollars and ALOT of hard work .

I would guess that it didn't go into gear, and that the fingers on the pressure plate are broken off.
