I did a few searches and could not find anything. Looking for info on adding a cooling system for the MTX. During the convention track day I was starting to have issues engaging 3rd, and on the way home 3rd and 5th. If I double clutched, or 'cleared' before I went into gear, it would be fine. Obvoiusly I am going to start by changing the fluid, but I am not sure if the quaife was generating that much more heat that I was having issues. Everything else felt fine.

I did find Gary Morrell's pics on his photobucket, but there was only a couple and I could not find any parts details. Looking for more info/thoughts/comments.
:thankyou:

I've looked into this a little and talked with a couple of people who are better mechanics and know more about SHOs than me. In brief, people usually route the outgoing line from the drain hole (which is only present if it was put in aftermarket, the later MTXs have the bossing for it, but no plug from the factory) and the incoming line to the fill plug location. Finding a pump that will hold up to the heat and ATF is a bit spendy, I've heard these work:

From everything I've heard, you get what you pay for when it comes to braided lines.

Locally, nobody runs them that I know of, I guess the ambient temps are low enough that its not an issue. However, guys down in California apparently need them.

I hope this gets you started. I'm sure more people will chime in.

Hit up Kirk, Mark, Sergio, Nick Chrimes, and I wonder if Panama Pat is still around. They probably have the most track time.

And honestly, I am not sure if I would need it all the time either. However, temps at Waterford Hills were probably in the 90s and it was a very tight and technical course, and the quaife was working quite a bit. Again, I am going to change the fluid, but I think a cooler would be great for longevity of everything.

The bolded part is the key. The quaife generates a lot of heat when it's working hard, and it can stress the fluid if tracked frequently.

This is how my system was done originally:

151 5142b

As mentioned, the feed line is tapped at the bottom of the tranny, the return goes back to the fill plug. Shown is a cheapie diaphragm-type (but lifetime warranty) low pressure fuel pump that I don't recommend using. They don't hold up to the heat. There are other alternatives, specifically gerotor diesel fuel pumps, that do better. They cost more, but they do better.

The cooler was simply an ATX transmission cooler, mounted as it is in an ATX V6 SHO.

on my mtx i put some pipe fittings together and an 1/2 inch thread elbow so i could add one more quart of trans fluid, not sure how much cooler the temp is but im pretty sure it helped with no problems. i have open diff instead of a quaife, im sure that makes a difference.

I really like the idea but my first thought is if its justified when changing the fluid costs $20 when the pump and line will run several hundred? I guess if your tracking it lot it could pay for itself fairly quickly.

You certainly don't need to spend several hundred on a pump and line. Budget racers can get this done for a lot less than that. Did you see my pic above? ;)

FWIW, though, I eventually deleted the whole cooling system after making some suspension setup changes (mostly making the rear stiffer). That kept the front on the ground enough that the quaife didn't work very hard after that, so the pump/cooler were no longer needed.

When I tracked my silver car it had no front bar and an open diff. No issues there, either, so no cooler needed.

On a forced induction car or other car that's making a lot more power than stock, it may still be a good idea when a quaife is used. I wouldn't bother putting in a cooler with an open diff.

It is a kit we are looking to offer...
Sign me up for testing..

However, I don't know if I do enough track days to really give it a work out.

So sign me up for SHOSource sponsored track days for me to test it at, also.
