I'm driving down the road this morning, ice cold air blowing from the vents. I stop at a light, and floor the SHO wagon from the light. When I let off the gas, the air starts to warm. Now the compressor is engaged and spinning, no strange noises, but the car blows the same temp as the vent...and the lines are not cold either. can the compressor just up and die while still maintaining internal pressure and spinning without grinding and such?

Make sure you didn't blow the compressor clutch. It maybe engaged but the shaft may not be turning the rubber has a habit of coming apart.

Anything can "just up and die".

Are you certain the clutch is engaged and you aren't just seeing the pulley rotating?

Yep, that is what happen to mine. It just chewed that sucker right up. Put on a new clutch and so far still going. When I bought the car, it sat like a year so I am thinking that had played a part in it.
