what is my 91 mtx? rod or cable?

a guy at the junk yard asked me if my 91 sho mtx was a rod or cable shift. don't have the car in front of me. how can i tell?

You will need the car to tell. you can look under the car to look for the rod shifter. You can look under the center console for the cables.

If it's a 91, and it hasn't been converted to rod shift by a previous owner, then it should be cable shift.

No, the rod shifter was introduced in 91. Some 91s had cable shifters, some had rod shifters.

Oops, my bad. I thought the change was between 91/92 models.

if it is a rod shifter the handle will be offset to the bottom left of center of the console,a cable shifter sits in the center of the console

If your shifter looks like it belongs in an 18 wheeler you have cables.

All 91+ models have the rod shifter. Ford started switching over on the rest after 2/91, but it was hit-or-miss as they used up the remaining cable units. They didn't complete the switch-over until the 4th qtr(may-july) production of the 91' model year. My 91' was produced in 2/91 and came with the rod shifter, but I've seen a 91(with 4/91 production date) with the cable shifter.

Not all Plus cars have a rodshifter.

I wish I had checked before I bought a rod shifter. I thought all 91s had cables, so I bought a used rod shifter, then got under the car and saw I already had one.
