a guy at the junk yard asked me if my 91 sho mtx was a rod or cable shift. don't have the car in front of me. how can i tell?

If it's a 91, and it hasn't been converted to rod shift by a previous owner, then it should be cable shift.
No, the rod shifter was introduced in 91. Some 91s had cable shifters, some had rod shifters.
Parts catalogue shows a production date split of 5/13/91 for the change from cable to rod shifters.

All 91+ models have the rod shifter. Ford started switching over on the rest after 2/91, but it was hit-or-miss as they used up the remaining cable units. They didn't complete the switch-over until the 4th qtr(may-july) production of the 91' model year. My 91' was produced in 2/91 and came with the rod shifter, but I've seen a 91(with 4/91 production date) with the cable shifter.![]()
