Yeah, it has been a long time. I know it is last minute but we could have a mini get together tomorrow, a funeral of sorts for my silver car. I have most of the parts off that I am trying to sell but there are lots of good parts left on the car like gas tank, good glass, two good doors, dynamatted trunk and lots of misc. Any AZ SHO club member with their dues paid up can come snag whatever is left on the car for free before I have it junked early next week. If you guys want to come over midday tomorrow we can grill and coordinate the part taking.

Is the tank empty? Is the car on stands or something so the tank could be dropped? Mostly interested in the pump/sender assembly.

Anything going on in March? I'll be out for a week :)

Eric, I saw your message on FB. Have you tried the "towel trick"? I have actually 'fixed' a 360 this way.

I have it apart, so no need for the towel trick. I'd heat cycled it after re-greasing the heat sinks and that made it functional for the first time in a long time, for about twenty minutes. Now it immediately goes to two red lights on power-up, so it's not possible to get it hot enough to reflow any cold solder joints, towel or not.

Trying to hunt down my favorite rework tech to get her to manually reflow the GPU/memory, but it's not even clear that that's the problem.

Do the fans not come on? If power is going through and the fans are on, the towel trick will get it hot enough. If you can get it to come up with an E74, you can have it repaired for free. Also, you can check the hidden error by holding the eject but

--==SECONDARY ERROR CODES==-
The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code
Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.
You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:
All four lights flashing - 0
One light flashing - 1
Two Lights flashing - 2
Three lights flashing - 3

0001 power supply problem
0002 Network Interface problem
0003 Power problem could be the PSU could be the GPU/CPU, somehow the console isn't getting clean power from the power supply.
0010 over heating
0011 over heating - If you are receiving this error after disassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsync screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.
0012 over heating
0013 over heating
0020 (Not yet known, possibly overheating)
0021 DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard.
0022 GPU Error / GPU Overheating
0023 (not yet known)
...
0101 (not yet known)
0102 unknown error
though it's most likely GPU related literally means the console does not know what is wrong. possibly a short or cold solder joint somewhere. So far there is 1 major theory for what causes most of these errors is that the Ram, CPU, or GPU are not soldered properly to the mother board due either to poor manufacturing or excessive heat up and cool down cycles that stress, weaken and eventually break the soldered connection.
There are two theories to fixing this one deals with the "X" clamps that hold down the chips. The other involves re-Heating the chips. DO NOT attempt either of these if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced. I have also heard of limited success by simply switching the AV cable from "HDTV" mode to "TV" mode.
0103 CPU Error/ CPU Overheating - see solution for error 0102
0110 Memory Error / Memory Overheating - see solution for error 0102

1003 Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it
1010 Hard Drive Error, Can be caused buy a corrupt or missing eProm.
1011 (not yet known)
1012 (not yet known)
1013 (not yet known) possibly a dashboard update error
1020 (not yet known)
1021 (not yet known)
1022 AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (could also be a problem with the encoder chip)

The fans only come on for a few seconds during the cold-start and then shut off when the red lights come on. The heat sinks stay stone cold, regardless how long the thing is left on in that condition, so no joy on the towel or unplugging the fan. Needs a manual re-flow IF that's even what's wrong.

The secondary code is 0013, which is supposedly the RAM on the GPU MCM overheating, although some claim it can also be due to a faulty electrical connection due to another cold solder joint. I had to mangle the case a little bit to get it apart, and there wasn't even a warranty seal sticker on it when it was handed to me, plus I think it's over three years old, so I don't think MS is going to fix this one.

I did re-grease the heat-sink a second time to make sure the GPU RAM was getting all the cooling goodness it needs. Might pop it all apart yet again to see if I can find the temp sensor(s) on that MCM.

What an utter piece of crap. It's Ferrari engineering with Yugo think-through. Lots of expensive parts and design work, but major top-level execution failure. I was just reading that MS set aside over $1B when they extended the warranties for the E74 (this one was E73 when I got it). With the current fault there's no display at all.

What motherboard revision does yours have.

My advice would be to pick up one of the latest Arcade models. I got mine for $100 from Walmart during the holidays.

Appears to be a Zephyr but might be a Falcon...not sure how to tell them apart.

It's not mine, just trying to fix it for somebody. You bought a console at Wally's for $100? I still don't know much about these things...

I did a major cleaning job on the GPU and now it boots and runs 2-3 minutes before it gets the red lights. Gonna take it apart AGAIN and clean even more thermal paste off and see what happens.

And apologies to Kyle for the thread hijack. :salute: Depending on what I can get done tonight and tomorrow morning on this Xbox, the g/f's car, and the Pumpkin, I might be able to make it.

There are a few online articles on how to reflow solder, however, it may not be worth it on the older models. Even the older models without HDMI are getting different boards put in them when sent in for replacement.

Personally, at $200 (regular price), it's probably worth it to get a newer one that is less likely to fail, is quieter and pulls less power. I got mine for $100 as a promotional deal they had for a week. I don't even think they really advertised it. I saw and ad for it on AVS Forum.

I think this one has been in for warranty and returned once already. But after cleaning the MCMs yet again, it now has the E74 error. So I buttoned it back up and will let the owner send it in for warranty (assuming I didn't void it...ack!).

The people who own it are on a tight enough budget that replacing it isn't in the cards. That's why I was taking a crack at it rather than just pitch it.

yep, its up on jack stands and the tank is nearly empty, should drop pretty easily

Coolio. Can you PM me contact info, address, etc.? Not sure I can make it, but if I can break free from here I'll give you a shout.

I really like my Wii, but if you're into cutting edge graphics or FPS type games it's not the console of choice. 480p video max, vs 1080p for the others.

The only issues I've heard of are occasional locking with particular titles, but firmware updates seem to have cleared up most of the problems. I've had the system lock up on one title only, in one particular place, so it's bad code in the game, not a problem with the console overall.

The case on mine will also buzz a little depending on disc access, but having it on its side with a controller on top cures that. And it doesn't buzz or rattle nearly as much as my '89 :)

I think the biggest failure with the Wii is the PSU, however, it is very rare. I've been pretty happy that I picked up a Wii. My wife will play games with me and it's a blast. I do wish that it was HD... Even if the graphics weren't cutting edge with textures and such, it'd be nice to have clear picture on a 1080p screen.
