For developmental purposes, and to have as an option, I'd recommend using a cheap ebay turbo for the time being.
Hear me out on this one.
To speed up your R&R and get this kit going together quicker, it might just be easier to use an ebay turbo, with that said...AVOID ssautochrome turbos at ALL costs. I bought a cheapbay turbo for $180 as a temporary solution for my Tbird, and I was surprised to be honest.
A cheap T3/T4 (preferably the ones with actual markings on them) were built pretty well. Aside from the fact that compressor and turbine aren't CNC'd and they lack ball bearings, they do alright.
This is just my experience with them. Mine ran for 1k miles before I put in a Holset.
Be prepared for lag though, which I shouldn't be surprised since I have a 2.3L 4banger, but I caught peak boost at around 3.5k (20psi) in 2nd gear. 1st gear doesn't boost as much...7psi (small displacement FTL).
This is just a suggestion, and definitely would be great for an option to have when the kit is ready. Save 1,500 on the kit by going with a cheap turbo solution and let the customer choose what they want to replace it later on.
I honestly think some ebay turbos get a bad rap, they make excellent daily driven turbos. I know of a lot of High HP BMW's/DSM's/Honduh's that run the same turbo, in every case the turbo outlasts the engine.
So just as someone who's had experience with them and knows people who have them, it would be a great option for the guys who want to go "cheap".
