Ok. Its been posted time and again that oil leaking into the plug wells is bad and should be fixed by replacing the valve cover gaskets. We all know that these are, or will become scarce now that they are discontinued. Plus, they are very expensive. My question is, how difficult is it to make some gaskets out of a sheet of cork (which is 6 bucks compared to 80), some silicone sealant and a pair of scissors? Will they work?

The valve cover gaskets and plug well seals are injection molded to a very specific shape. You'd never replicate it with a sheet of cork. You can try sealing it up with silicone(reusing the old gaskets) but it's a 50/50 chance that it won't last.

Why? The metal intake to head gaskets are reuseable, relatively cheap and currently available. The fiber intake manifold gaskets are also readily available, but can be replaced with bulk gasket material. That would require a lot of precision cutting, but you never have to replace those gaskets unless you disassemble the intake. I have still never had to do that on my engine and it is a "few" years old.
