Basically, the car is very hard to start. it is indeed cold
outside.

This isn't exactly a SHO, but I couldn't find
a GL forum. I figure that some people in here
might know of some similar problems. It's a 94
Ford Taurus, GL Sedan V6 3.0L

by hard to start, I mean the revolutions that the engine
make are much much slower than they used to be; it's
as if something is dragging the engine behind. I had the
battery tested, and it checked out fine. I don't believe it to
be the starter, because this just started happening all of
the sudden, and it's getting worse.

We were low on coolant, so I added enough antifreeze to
top it off. originally I believed that the water pump
could be a little frozen up, and causing the engine to become
very hard to start. but after the antifreeze addition and about
a half day of waiting, it's doing the same thing still.

Sometimes it'll take 10 revolutions before the car will start, all
of them are slow, no more than two or three a second. Other
times it'll start with only one revolution, followed by a single *knock*
sound. I asked around, and some believed it to be the timing. since
this car has about 118K miles on it, and it's a belt instead of a
chain; I figured that the belt could be becoming loose, or have
teeth stripped off of it, causing the timing to get off enough to
further problems.

This is what I told my mother, who currently pays for the car. since
I want her to trade it in for something else (it has slight
transmission problems, a bad tire and other such things going
wrong with it) I tried to urge her to speak to the dealer who
she is paying (Weekly Pay Auto sales) to do a tradein for
something else.

She speaks to her oh-so-intelligent boyfriend, and his friend who
"determine" it to be the spark plugs and plug wires. These are
the same two fellas who don't know what a tensioner pulley is,
much less how to loosen it to remove a belt.

I fail to believe that the spark plugs and plug wires are slowing
a car which once did 10 to 20 revolutions per second while starting
down to no more than 5.

(note: I describe a revolution as the sound of the starter between
it's starting phase, making "wrrrrrw" noises. correct me if i'm wrong
or if their's a better term to describe this)

Her oh-so-intelligent boyfriends have somehow convinced her
that these said plugs and plug wires are causing all of the problems!

I recieved a comment from her:
"I'm not going to spend another dime on that car till I find out
exactly what is wrong with it"
"I'm going to take it and have it put on damn diagnostics"

me: "and that'll run you $100"
her: "no it won't, If that [weekly pay owner] doesnt' want to
trade with me, i'm going to make him put it on diagnostics"

The 1-3 and 2-4 clutchpacks are going out in the transmission, it
needs a tuneup, probably new sensors and all, maybe a new
radiator and a water pump.

All I want to do is get the car off my hands, and get something
that's decently reliable. The recall list on this one ford vehicle
is longer than my credit report. She acts like she wants to hang
on to it, and fix all the problems with some money that she
supposedly has. but I still can't find out what can she's ****ting
these $100 bills in.

I'll put my 2 cents on the starter. Pull it and get it tested, autozone or any parts place will test it for free.

Got some issues with mom eh? :D

I own a 1995 GL.

It's the starter. My starter has been going out for about 3000 miles now and it turns really slow and seems to speed up as it's cranking. You can also hear the gear spin down as it is releasing, so the armature is sticking a bit too. It's a simple job to do.

Just get a rebuilt one.

I don't know about the GL, but I have my 92 SHO for about 5 years and I've just put in my 2nd starter.

Yeah, it'll take a few more revolutions to start, then all the sudden, you'll have a dead starter.

If you can remove it and have it tested for free... do it. Oh, if you know more about car maintenance than your Mom's boyfriend, follow your instincts and the advice of other Ford experienced users like on the TCCA forum.

Well supposedly my mothers boyfriend knew how
to remove the tensioner pulley off of a 93 Chevy
1500 pickup, since I was trying to get the
alternator off.

I questioned him about it, he acted like the
device never existed. and exclaimed that he'd
have to "fool with it". I made note to him that
"fooling" with a spring loaded pulley is grounds
for getting a full demonstration of Newtons law
of relativity. I left it be, and later read a
Haynes manual on how to get around the pulley
without ending up with a third eye socket.

I'd like to think I have more experience than
this guy. he's a prison feind and likes to
spend his time behind bars. my mother has gotten
to the point to where if anything is wrong with
the car and she can't feel it, she declares me
terminally insane untill it happens to her.

Like when she was sitting in the parking lot, and
the car wouldn't start? Yeah it's the same problem
i'm having now.

I'll have the starter tested, and get it replaced
if the dealer won't let me trade the car.

But that's just asking for a world of problems,
this is a ford; remember? they're anemic.

Not sure if anyone pointed it out yet, but for even more thorough info for the Taurus GL check out Taurus Car Club of America -TCCA- A good sized forum.

SCUZZY,

It is the starter, or the cables to the starter. Pull the starter and have it tested, or have your local service station do an amp draw test on the starter.

Ah, SHOZ123 are you setting us up? Where is Allen Funt? rangerj
