so i have an SES light on my 97, ever since i got the car I can't figure the dang thing out! it says the left bank is running lean, i have done everything under the sun except replacing the maf (cleaned it once), the injectors and there is a hole in one of the cats. I am wondering if the xcal can help me narrow down my problem and tell me why or where its running lean?! it hasn't gotten good gas mileage from the day ive gotten the car so i don't know what else to do.

The reason im being so careful on buying this is because if i need all new injectors or coils or something expensive i won't have that because of the xcal, but if it can help me figure out this problem then so be it...

so anyone who owns or has had experiance with xcals please help me out...:thankyou:

More than the xcal, you need to be able to preoperly diagnose the problem. The xcal can help you by data logging computer information and showing you a picture of what the computer is doing.

The first thing that comes to mind is the O2 sensors tehmselves. I'd swap sides with the O2 sensors and see if the code changes sides. If it doesn't, then you know it's not the sensors. A vacuum leak comes to mind next.

The Xcal will give you an exact reading of the O2 sensor. But the code is already telling you that this reading is out of range. What the Xcal can tell by data logging is if the O2 is dead or if it is very slow going though it's oscillations.

It cannot tell you if you have a vacuum leak or if the FI is stuck on or partially clogged. The MAf would affect both banks unless the other is very close to giving a code.

As suggested, a single O2 code is usually indicative of a bad sensor. Real rich and lean codes will usually impact both banks.

Try Doug's suggestion, or just replace the offending upstream o2 (I recommend replacing both).

o2's were replaced although now that i think of it it was the left bank that i tapped an o2 sensor in with an impact gun because the threads were stripped, hmm maybe its high flow y pipe time...

can o2's make the car shudder and change rpm while idleing? it will stall intermittently sometimes on unleaded but hasn't stalled on premium yet. The fuel pressure regulator, egr, IAC, camshaft and crankshaft postition sensors have been replaced.

Try this on a warm engine.

Screw the throttle stop screw in until the car is idling 1200 rpm or so. Disconnect the IAC valve electrical connector.

Screw the throttle stop out until the car is idling around 400-500 rpm.

Then plug the IAC back in.

Turn engine off and disconnect the battery.

Start car and let it learn the new idle by letting it sit in park until the idle settles, shift to reverse and wait until the idle settles, turn on AC and while still in reverse wait until idle settles. Then put back in park with the AC on and let the idle settle.

If you have a hole in the cat in the bank the code is for, you need a new cat! You're getting a false lean code from it. Stop throwing shit at it

nope the hole in in the back bank cat, and i believe the left bank in which im getting a lean code thrown from is the front bank. i got the hole to seal up like 8K miles ago by putting some exhaust patch on it and now it came loose, im thinkin its time to just get new everything considering the engine is running rich, therefore the cats are full of crap and the threads are stripped on one of the o2's.

Thanks paul ill try that first thing tomorrow and get back to you. what should i be looking for?
