I have a magna flow x pipe (2.25") that replaces my third muffler/resonator. I was told by a worker at Jegs when I bought the x pipe that it helps air flow and its possible to "gain 1hp..." (no, I didn't buy it because of that I bought it for the sound) but I was just told by a fellow SHO owner that a x pipe is not needed by turbocharged motors and that it's bad for HP gains. I.e. Planning on getting a dyno tune soon so I'll ditch the x pipe if this is true

I may be talking out of turn in regards to turbo'd motors, but in terms of naturally aspirated engines, the x-pipe's purpose is for exhaust scavenging. The idea is that an exhaust pulse coming from one side of the motor travels down the pipe, passes the x-pipe, and creates a vacuum in the opposite down pipe as it passes helping pull exhaust from the other pipe. And back and forth it goes.

On a turbo'd car, I'd figure that it wouldn't help anything because the exhaust pulses have been homogenized into one single flow because of the turbo. It's not pulses anymore.

Hurting performance though? I wouldn't think so unless there was something wrong with the design of the x-pipe.

I'm interested to know, as well, if anyone here has any adverse experiences...

I've run an 'X' pipe on my custom exhaust set up (1st of it's kind to the platform, for BOTH DP'S, as well as Cat-Back) since 2010/2011.

No issues whatsoever to speak of.

As far gains, or detriment to same.... idk.

But it goes w/o saying that those mods are part of the overall equation that garnered me the power and speed records for the platform.

I've seen your car on YouTube. I love it. Nice ride!

I would doubt it would have any significant impact on performance.

As mentioned, in a NA motor the pulses in the x-pipe help scavenging but in a turbo there is no pulsing and it's a continuous flow of exhaust. I could potentially see how two exhaust flows that cross would create massive turbulence and a slight restriction. For a NA motor with pulses think of two lines of people walking in an x pattern where the people are evenly spaces. As they cross through the x they can pass through the gaps and continue on their paths (like a marching band does). The people would represent the exhaust pulses and how they can pass through the x-pipe with minimal disturbance. Now think if you lined everyone up so they were right on the heals of the person in front of them (continuous flow from a turbo engine). Now when they go to cross they're going to interfere with the other side. In order for everyone to pass some are going to have to slow down to create a gap and allow the other side to pass. This is going to slow down the people behind and create a backup. This could mean additional back pressure on the turbo exhaust. Back pressure on a turbo is multiplied as "shown" back pressure on the engine.

Thanks for the input guys. When I take it to the shop I'm going to ask if the tuner recommends me to go back straight piped or not. I was told to go back to OEM air box but I love the sound of the turbos too much..

If the center of the X pipe is big enough, cross-section-wise, theoretically it's not a restriction. But then, for an X-pipe to work, it should (again, theoretically, I don't know personally) be the size of a single pipe otherwise the pulse slows down and stalls.

So, there's that. On the other hand, it depends on how much exhaust is really coming out of the engine compared to the size of the pipe.

It would be great if you could get it tuned, and dyno'd with the X pipe in place, and then remove it and go through the dyno again - but ... it's not my money to spend :)

I was thinking I should do this since there really isn't no way of telling

DWayne,
Did you ever get this x pipe installed and make it to the synopsis? I'm also interested in placing the 3rd cat / resonator with MagnaFlow x pipe but want to see if there was any adverse effect or what you thought of the sound.

I have the magnaflow x pipe on. It makes the car sound sporty honestly I think my setup will be louder without the x pipee but it's still decently loud with it on
