Last week SHO sounded like it was an airplane taking off, next thing I knew white smoke was blowing out of the exhaust. I had it towed to the shop. They suspected I blew a turbo, but they were worried about the engine too.

I got the call today they drained the oil and cut the filter and found a ton of metal. The recommendation is to replace the turbos and the engine. They said it isn't worth paying for new turbos and risking blowing those again if the engine is gone. My estimate is $14,000-$16,000. 2015 SHO 125,000 miles. I'm leaning toward doing the repair, but looking to see if anyone has experience with this or can weigh in on other potential problems down the road putting in a new engine.

Sorry to hear.

Don’t know anything about your car as far as condition, other small problems, or how maintenance has been. However, if it was me and the money was equal between a new (different) SHO, and fixing mine, I’d fix mine.

I know my car, I know how it’s been treated, and how it’s been maintained. If you are determined to continue SHO ownership dumping yours and stepping into just a different but same car you know nothing about seems silly.

Again, we’re talking if the money was the same. That being said, $16K seems crazy high. I’ve seen rebuilt 3.5’s from $5-7k. If I knew I had to spend $16k for repairs I’d at lest see what’s out there in a newer model year with less miles.

Good luck whatever you decide.

It's a huge decision to make, I've looked at other SHOs. To buy another one same year or newer is anywhere from $13,000-$20,000 but those have 80,000 and up. To your point doesn't seem worth it and if the turbos end up going in a few years like mine did I'm not any further ahead.

I've had absolutely no problems with it before today, and I've kept up with the maintenance since I bought it with 40,000. I had some problems with the paint so I literally just paid $5,000 to have it repainted, which is a dagger too now that it's dunzo.

Interesting on the rebuild price, my price is for a brand new engine 3 year warranty. I suspect that's why it's much higher. I did get a second quote and it was in the same ballpark. I absolutely love this car, had no intentions of ever getting rid of it, so that's a factor.

That does absolutely suck. Have you checked for SHO's with body damage, but good Engines? There was a owner on here that was trying to sell their car after some side impact damage. I think he was fairly close to you. Try to see if Sledriver is still in possesion of his ride. He's got parts in the classified section.

These cars can do that for you as you have witnessed. Everything is about current and future money. If you can easily afford it then no issue. The rest of the car will still be old and higher mileage with parts that have finite life. You have to decide what is the smart money.

I blew the engine in my 2013 FoST and dropped $10k, and five weeks of my life with the hassle, replacing it so I feel for you jrembold1120, it royally suuuuck.

Many of us will have car maintenance that we'll spend money on for many years to come as luigisho pointed out. Boring cars will come and go but do you have a car that people start rebuilding 5, 10, 15 years down the road because it's fun and different? Not sure but I currently don't regret replacing the engine in the Focus because it's a fun car to drive and IMO there are not enough of those to choose from on the US market any longer.

Can't agree more. I have brought her home and I'm going to do some of my own diagnosing before I'm sold I need a new engine. But to be completely honest even if it does I lean toward doing it. I bought this car with the intention of keeping it forever. Like you said it's fun to drive and in 15 years how many will be left. So many people say it isn't worth it, but idk right now I lean toward it being totally worth it.

I was almost in that similar boat. 2015 with 60k, misfire in #4 to a total meltdown of piston, rings and scarring in cylinder. Extended warranty was trying not to pay but have since reconsidered so the ball is in motion. I can get a reman FROM FORD for under 5k, go that route and save some cash. I see some GH turbos for sale for 3k then $1500-2k labor will net you a bad ass car for less than they are quoting you.

That price for a reman makes me jealous, my shop was also getting a reman from ford with 3 year warranty but the price wasn't that good.

In all my research I found a great reman supplier in Maryland that had them for $4700 shipped with a million mile Warranty.
