I just spent all morning trying to straighten out a bent Woodruff key...it's straightened out ok, and the pulley is on. On with the questions...

1. Just for the sake of clarity, what is the assembly order for the timing pulley/crank pulley? I'm pretty sure that it goes timing pulley, belt, washer thing, crank pulley, bolt, but it seems like the timing pulley goes back a bit far...like there should be a spacer or something. When I put it all together, the crank pulley lines up flush with the front of the crank (with no torque).

2. Does anyone have a good method (aside from a strap wrench) to turn the crank pulley to set the crank timing that doesn't involve the crank bolt? If I set the timing that way, I'll need to starter bump the bolt to get it loose (to put the pulley back on), and I'll be back at square one. (I should mention that it's an ATX).

Thanks in advance for any help...you guys are quite helpful.

put the car in 5th, hold the drivers side wheel and turn the passanger till the dot on the timing gear lines up with the mark on the oil pump housing, then put the harmonic balancer on and torque to proper settings

order: timng gear, washer, timing case, harmonic balancer, bolt

i think it torques to 120 lbs.

He said note it is an ATX. So, putting it in 5th will not help him at all as it is impossible. Goulash, when I did my waterpump and timing belt I held the crankshaft with a strap wrench and torqued the bolt down. Took two of us as I couldn't do both things myself. I have heard of people using the serpentine belt to tighten it also. But, you are pretty much limited to a strap wrench type method. Just make sure you get it tight!

"Look ma...no leaks!"

Well, I just put it together for a test run (wheels still off), and it doesn't look like I have any leaks (it ran for about 15 minutes, the upper radiator was hot and the oil pressure was about 20 PSI at idle). I'm still apprehensive...like it's too good to be true or something. I'm THRILLED about this...now I just have to re-fit the exhaust and double-check my torque specs.

Thanks to everyone who has posted to help with this project...which has included upper and front 60k's, and a rod bearing job in about a week. It's taken longer than that, as I've spent a lot of time waiting for mail order parts, but still, that's a lot of work!
