Wiring these open and taking the IRMC out of the loop completely has been mentioned by a number of people that have done this. I think the general Gen III community would be interested in knowing more. I certainly would. Could people that have done this post here, letting us know:

1. how you did it mechanically,
2. how long you have been running wired open,
3. where in the continent you are at so we can get a weather/temperature fix, and
4. in general your feelings about how the car has reacted to the change in any ways that you have noticed?

Also, if anyone of you have a digital camera, photos of the completed wire open job would certainly help some members that have not done this, but are thinking of doing so.

I did it using two wire ties to bind the linkage actuators together while the secondaries were held open. I live in East Central Illinois and drove it this way this past winter.

Only noticed a slight bogging when the engine was first started and it was below 20F. Other than that no noticeable differences other than sound. With them open all the time you get a lower pitched growl around 2500-3000 rpm.

I have since had some chip tweaking and have removed the butterflies and shaft altogether as well as the IRMC box and cable. I am completely happy to not have to worry about the cable breaking, small plastic internal gear on the box breaking or the secondaries sticking closed or open.

Nothing and nothing. There is no difference in performance or economy. As mentioned, the only noticable differences is a little bogging and rough idle right at startup when it's cold, and the psychoacoustics of the fictional power surge at 3350rpm is no longer as pronounced--it comes in gradually at about 2500rpm.

Paul might be getting a tad more HP from better breathing up high since he physically removed the shaft and plates.

I have a picture of one cylinder port with the shafts removed but nothing else.

It would be detrimental for the V6 as it has true dual runners. The V8 only has isolated intake valves.

Here is a pic of the IRM without the butterfies or plates.

My experience with open secondaries is similar to Paul's. I first used tie wrap but could not get it tight enough to hold the butterflies open all the way. With the tie wrap still in place I wrapped a piece of clothes hanger wire from the IMRC cable bracket to the arm of the butterfly shaft & tightened it with a pair of pliers. It isn't really pretty, but it is holding them open all the way.

I live in central Connecticut and I did this around January this year, during one of our coldest winters in recent memory. I never had any trouble starting the car, even below zero degrees F. The idle did seem a bit unstable especially when it was really cold out and the car was not warmed up & it also smelled a bit rich. The new programming from Doug seems to have taken care of both of those issues as I told him about my secondaries before he burned the chip.

All things considered, I like the car better without the secondaries, although the difference is surprisingly small.

can this be done electronically? there are some wires on the IRMC box, could a couple of them be jumpered to open the secondaries? then you could run a switch and open them electronically?!?

If you have a functioning IRMC, why?
