Jason - thanks so much for the info. I already gave up and went to a custom shop here in town. They'll put a 2-way up to 3000 ft. installed for $400, so that's a better option for me and no door opening issues either. It's a CompuStar and I have an older model on my '06 Mustang which has worked great. For $450, could get it so it starts from your smartphone anywhere in the world, but that's also an additional $50/year and seems like a bit much. They don't sell the Viper systems, but they come highly recommended on the quality work they do.

Sounds like Ford got their stuff together in 2013 and fixed those design flaws. Thinking about persuading my wife to let me take over the SHO and she can get a 2015 Explorer Sport with the factory unit on it :) Ah, wishful thinking...
