if she is driving those kind of miles, she'll love a taurus of some kind, quiet as can be & if she's doing hwy miles with my non-pp. it's only going 1800 rpm's @75 mileage should be good. i've got in that range on the few road trips that i've done. it's just driving her around town that hurts the mileage because especially a sho comes in around 4400#, but the awd is worth the extra weight especially during winter. remember no matter what bpd says & he of all people a focus st, with his monster,Haha. happy wife happy life, & sounds like don't have any kids but if do plenty of room in a sho for any adds to family.

Her driving is mixed hwy and city. She does home health so travels to peoples homes all day. We do have a 10 month old. Our current vehicle is a 2007 lexus rx400h, and the rear seat room is just entirely too small. The taurus is much more spacious.
So the wife just called, shes been driving the car all morning for work and its averaging 19.5mpg. She says she has been babying it and that is the best she can get. At this point it is looking like a no go for us. Unless there is something we can purchase to get her in the 25mpg range we are not going to buy it. I have seen claims of that high but im very apprehensive without some sort of proof. May be turning it back in this afternoon.
I have had mine for just about 15k now. We travel regularly in it, and it has been to Californa 3 times and Colorado once (from Utah) in the last 6 months. I DO NOT baby the car, and we've seen 24-27mpg pretty regularly on the freeway. I'm a 80+mph traveler on the freeway. It will drop to <20mpg pretty quick if I am only around town though FWIW.
Someone above mentioned they like theirs more every time they drive it. I would second this. It is hard for me to verbalize just how much I love mine. I honestly don't know what I would trade out of it for....

Basically, you're not going to get a car that is the size of the SHO with that kind of performance that gets anywhere near 25mpg in mixed driving. Your previous car was a hybrid, and I'm guessing considerably more expensive than the SHO. You should do the math and see how much more the SHO would cost in gas, and weigh that in vs your purchase price, features andperformance of alternatives. I wouldn't get too caught up in the gas mileage without analyzing the numbers objectively. In general, hybrids for instance NEVER pay back their extra purchase price through gas savings.
You may just be looking at the wrong type of car if gas mileage is your #1 criteria. Maybe take a look at Acura TL? I think Hondas get generally good mileage, and it's a nice car with the option of AWD. Might be tight in the back seat. How about a diesel? Twin Turbo 365hp and economical are rarely to be found in the same sentence!
my experience with current technology gas engined cars (not hybrids) is that you get worse gas mileage if you "baby" it than if you just drive it. If you "baby" it, the pcm will upshift too soon, which results in more lugging and lower gas mileage than if you drive "normal". my theory is that they do it for the EPA mileage test, that somehow that helps on that test, but it does not always translate into the best mileage in real life - but that is just a theory of mine.

Makes sense. The only problem I experience with this is in low-speed stop-n-go situations (no shortage around here), where there is a LOT of babying of the throttle due to the high-powered engines we have in vehicles today. If there were re-mapped throttle response in such situations (such as with adaptive cruise control), same input from driver, lesser output from engine, would make it much safer IMHO.
the Fusion/MKZ is an awesome vehicle, and will do better on gas than the Taurus/MKS, but has less rear seat legroom, which was one of your concerns. and while some poked fun at the idea of a Focus ST, they are outstanding vehicles, lots of fun to drive and great gas mileage.
on some of the Lincoln vehicles, if you put it in sport mode the throttle response is enhanced, and if you put it in economy mode the throttle response is reduced - just as SHOdded suggested above. (I just don't recall off the top of my head which have that and which don't...)

to be honest just don't think the 2.0l taurus is a good car, too much car for that engine to pull around & get mileage & longevity, will be in the turbo a fair amount. i have a '13 escape based on fusion platform & really like it a lot with 2.0l, so if you have it down to 2 i'd pick the fusion.

Smart move...live within your budget. If those extra miles per gallon are that meaningful then you made the right choice.

I get 21-22 and I think that's just fine for a big AWD sedan that blows the doors off just about everything else.

I feel bad for all these poor saps who traded in their nice cars for a eco box because gas was $4/gal. Ha, suckers!
Even if gas gets above $3.50 again soon, it doens't matter. I've done the math and a grand or so a year in gas savings isn't worth driving a slow small car.
If you want an AWD car that averages high 20's in mixed driving, get a 170HP Subaru. HAHA!

unless a person is strapped for cash, and it sounds like you are well within your means, I would say get the car you want. I used to have a 94 tbird SC that was my baby until it got rear ended and written off When i started looking at a replacement car i was thinking i would be smart and look at gas mileage, costs, reliability (you know be responsible !) so i looked at many brands and models and settled on a 2007 focus 2 dr hatchback which i drove until 2013, the focus was probably one of the best cars i have ever owned, never spent a cent on it other than fuel and oil changes, the gas mileage was exceptional ! BUT i was never truly happy with the car so i decided to look for a new one and was looking at fusions and a CC passat until i stumbled upon my 2013 sho pp and have never looked back, i like the car more every time i drive it. anyways my 2 cents ! cheers
