I know some of you on 20" Rims swapped from Eagle F1 Supercars to The Michelin Primacy MXV4s....

My Eagle F1 Supercars have about 10,000 miles on them and the shoulder wear is failtastic, along with the ever increasing road noise, even after rotating them at 5000.

So I'm thinking about swapping to the Primacy MXV4.

My concern is that they will not handle as good as the Eagle F1 Supercars, which do have tenacious grip for what they are.

Your opinions?

I'm very happy with the Michelins....I wouldn't consider the F1's I hated them on my Corvette (For road noise and ride quality...they handle darn good!) and I won't go back. Let's face it....I'm not autocrossing this thing and the Michelins still handle pretty good.

No all-season tire will handle as well as a max performance summer tire in the dry. Too many compromises are made for tires to work well in all seasons. Summer tires are optimized for performance in the dry warm to moderate weather. Treadwear is the normal downside to stick summer performance tires. IMHO Continental Extreme DWS are the best all-season tires that I have used and come with a 50k treadlife warranty.

I've not driven on the supercars, but I have driven on the Eagle F1 GS-D3's, and then switched to an AS performance tire. To me, there was a remarkable difference between the two, however bear in mind that I drive my car harder than most. If you just get on it on a straightaway here and there, you'll likely not notice any difference.

If you do drive your car somewhat aggressively, do bear in mind that you are switching from a Max Performance summer compound tire (which is designed to be more responsive, and have much higher levels of adhesion to the pavement), to a touring tire (which is designed to be cushy and deliver great mileage). What may have been 4/5ths on the F1's could likely be well beyond the limits of the Primacy's, which can leave you in a bad way.

I suppose what I'm hammering away at is that if you decide to switch from the F1's to the Primacy's, and you drive even somewhat aggressively at all, you would do well to familiarize yourself with the difference in handling dynamic that this change will impart on the car, and be ready to adjust your driving habits accordingly.

Changed from Goodyear f1 that came on the SHO to Michelin mxv4 last Friday. Not because i didn,t like the tire ,good summer tire, but were i live needed a tire that was good winter tire. The Goodyear sucked in any lite snow. The michelins are a good tire ,ride well and handle well.Kept the F1 and will change them back in the spring.

Thanks for the responses.

Jed, I had the extreme DWS on my 7 Series. With the radio turned up, I could still hear them. I ended up putting the General Exclaim UHPs on the car, which handle great and are quiet, but I dont see them lasting long (255/45R18 in the front, 275/40R18 in the rear). At least with the SHO it has the same sizes all the way around and you can rotate them.

Looks like Primacy is what I'll be getting soon.

Last time I checked, there are more than 2 choices for tires on this great planet. Check 'em out...

I love the supercars on this car. Hated them on my caliber. The seem to grip and handle well. No problems in the rain either. I will be using a dedicated snow tire for the winter.

I agree 100% ! In my opinion the Michelins are a much better overall tire .

Hi Jim, I understand that, I've been researching tires before the car even came in. Unfortunately, in 245/45R20, the choices are pretty limited.

Bridgestone Blizzak - Snow tire
Kumho Ecsta - Had Kumhos in the past. I'm done with them.
General Exclaim UHP - Good ride and handling but treadwear is meh.
Goodyear RS-A - OE tire, squishy and low treadlife
Hankook Evo - I hear these are noisy.
Firestone WideOval Indy 500/Firestone Firehawk GT - I like the wideoval tire, its new, but my past experience with Firestone tires, is while they're pretty good, road noise seems to come up after half tread life remains.

and a few other "Sport Truck" Tires.

None of the tires above really appeal to me as far as ride, handling, and treadwear. Which I understand, theres not really a way to have a combination of outstanding handling with good treadwear.

My distributor has Michelins on sale right now, and they're cheaper than any of those tires above except for the RS-A, which I am not impressed with.

Check 1010tires.com. There are some Falkens, Toyos (which are awesome), Nittos, Pirellis, Yokohomas, and some others.

thanks for the info, I'll check them out.

I stay away from Falkens as do most of the marauder guys, there was an issue with their tires causing cars to lose control.

Just checked there, their cheapest private label tire is 10 bucks more than what I can buy the Michelins for.

Guess I know what's going to go on the car after track day....

General UHP's are not really considered a A/S tire. But... my son ran them 2 winters in IA on his 04'GTO rear wheel driver. Says that if you can't start, you can't stop either!!!!! He also got over 30K out of them. Not as responsive as the Bridgestone 750's on my 04' GTO, but ride much better.

DOnt get much snow here in TExas, but the Exclaims seem to flat spot in cold weather very easily.

Potenza RE750s have been replaced with the RE760 Sport. I just mounted a set on my friends CTS-V. He likes them so far. I have RE960s on lots of other cars with great luck but theydont make the 20" size for the SHO.

This tends to be true for many soft compound tires left to sit in cold weather. It happened on the Eagles all the time.
