The "main part" as in the rotor?

If so, chances are the brushes won't let the slip rings get past, which means you'll have to force it and break the brushes in the process (which is no biggie since new brushes are a standard part of a rebuild).

If you have a small sharp pick or probe you may be able to use it to retract the brushes sufficiently by using it in the hole that is normally used to hold the brushes retracted until the alt is assembled.

Last time I tried to do that on a 94 atx one , I had to have a soldering tool to separate the stator (or was it the regulator?) from one of the halves.

Last time I rebuilt my ATX alternator, I had a heck of a time getting the rotor out and had to use two little prybars (ok, they were screwdrivers) and some fabric to keep from gouging the wires on the rotor and pry the rotor out. I could hear little crunching noises as the brushes crumbled but I had new ones so no biggie.

Just yank harder. It'll come out.

Hot dog! got it (rotor) out had to give it a little pressure like chris said.

It seems the brushes are worn down. There is a little hole to hold the brushes back and they are worn up to that little hole.
