Who autocrosses their SHO??

Went to my first Autocross today. Didn't run, just watched. However, I went around the course with my friend in his S-Trim equipped '92 notchback Mustang and I am hooked. Next time out I am going to run the SHO.

My SHO has Tokicos, and subframes but no other suspension mods. It has slicers and stock sized BFG Comp T/A VR-4s. I plan on upgrading the tires, but probably will keep the stock size and slicers.

Just curious to hear stories of guys/gals that have run their cars, how they did and what additional mods you would suggest.

I started stock, added SFC's & 17" wheels first, then rear sway bar on my 95, then the blower, then the Eibachs, Tokicos, 96 brakes, and oops! Never got to run with the springs, struts & brakes! The blower kept causing me grief.

I’m also an Autocross addict. I started in ’94 with a Firebird and then started running my SHO in G-Stock in ’98. First, please spend $15 for a rulebook at www.sccs.org. Your fellow competitors will thank you for properly classing your car. Note that your SFCs bump you from Stock, past Street Touring, past Street Prepared, into Street Modified.

I ran G-stock in ’99 with mild success. G-stock is no place for the SHO now since cars like the all-wheel-drive, Turbo Subaru RS 2.5 have been placed there this year.

I ran E-Street Prepared in 2000 always finishing 3rd or 4th. The SHO can definitely be competitive here, but check the rules – many of our favorite mods are illegal (ie, SFBs, SFCs, coil-overs, big brakes).

I sat out most of 2001 with a broken tranny.

I plan on running Street Modified this year. This is a fun class because there are few rules. On paper the SHO looks weak because the class includes naturally aspirated cars up to 6.0L, but HP isn’t everything.

Most of all, get out there and have fun. The temptation is to buy the “hot mods” so you can go faster, but sticky tires and lots of seat time will yield the biggest bang for your buck.

Horsepower deifnitely isn't everything! I have a '92 with alot of the suspension mods but with few power mods. With roughly 235hp and BFGoodrich R1's, at my last autocross, I beat a couple SC SHO's, 2 Vipers, 3 Cobras, an older(89?)M3, and many more. The only car that beat me that day was a Boxster S with the same R1's that I had. And that was by .2 seconds on close to a minute track.

Well, I figure I am going to be in SM with the mods I have. Besides a set of Eibach springs and possibly some bigger brakes I really don't want to do too much more. I would like to run some stickier tires. I am not out to be a champion, just have fun. My buddy's S-Trimmed Mustang is in SM as well..that car is fast but the handling is much less refined.

I am also considering setting up my LTD to run in SM. It is currently more drag oriented but could easily be setup for Autocross. This car is the midsize LTD and a Fox platform car. All Mustang parts bolt on...the wheelbase is just a little longer. With 400 HP @ the flywheel and just about 2800 pounds it could be quite fun to slide around in. Another fast 4 door with a slightly different flavor.

I am going to try the SHO first though before I invest the cash in the LTD to make it run.

I am sure seat time is the most valuable asset in this sport.

Check www.autocross.com for a nation-wide schedule and links to clubs in your area. Also, sorry for the incorrect link for rule books. It should be www.scca.org. Most clubs operate by SCCA rules.

I started Autocrossing in '95 with my RX-7 turbo. Found out that ASP isn't a fun class to compete in when you only have one competitor. I ran '95-98 in ASP, '99 in BP, finishing mid-rear pack at every race.

I have autocrossed the SHO two full seasons. I did one full season in (the old) GS aka the Type-R class. It wasn't for me.

Found STS last season at Akron, (www.autox.net) and have been having fun there. I think I did surprisingly well given the tires I was running and the small amount of time spent on alignments

Even when you're not winning, Autocross is fun.

Definately a lot of fun. You'll safely find the limits of your car's handling abilities. And in this case, it's more the driver than the car. I autocrossed a 2000 Malibu rent-a-car (don't tell) and let Turbosho do a couple laps in it. He beat some kid in an Integra Type R. The differnt clubs usually try to hold driving schools 2 or 3 times a year. They are definately worth going to.

Absolutely, this is true for open tracking and drag racing as well. The right rubber for the right job, and lots of seat time.

Seat time is the best mod (usually pretty expensive to!) and it usually works out to be the most fun

I did it today! It is absolutly awesome. Even tho the morning cars got to go in clear weather, and I got stuck with the pouring rain, it was still super fun.
