White smoke, misfire, no CEL

Torque converter shudder feels like a misfire. How many miles on car? Has the transmission fluid been changed? Doesn't explain the white smoke. Maybe more than one problem.

Car has 112k on it.
I saw on the vehicle history report it had been changed. In just don't remember the mileage.
I'm sure hoping it's not transmission related. But at this point.....
Either way I'll probably schedule a fluid change. Just in case.

I can say I do wish the damn thing would throw a code.

Put some of this in the transmission. It's cheap, won't hurt anything and may fix your problem. I've used it on several cars and it is good stuff.

I would think anybody/shop with a good professional bi-directional scan tool could diagnose the problem? It can check a lot of engine parameters (injectors, cylinder compression, etc).

I’ve been looking at one. They allow you to go into the ecu and modules to adjust some parameters. Seem to be $700 and up.

Not white smoke related, but I believe I read something somewhere in this mass array of helpful info on this forum(not being sarcastic, being grateful) somone had similar misfires so that person replaced their fuel pump control module. It’s located behind the passenger side back seat. Takes maybe 10 minutes and $30. Worth a shot and no diagnostic charge. Definitely use the motorcraft part. I keep a spare in my glove box as they’re known for a slow death and not immediate failure. Hope this is helpful not adding to your frustrations. Good luck.

Update again:

I bought 2 bottles of shudder fix.
It was immediately better.
So either I caused something during removal/replacement of the air box that remedied it, or it's the torque converter.

I'm very displeased about this. I had big mod plans this winter. And having the torque converter replaced was not one of them.

I'm going to drive it a tiny bit, in the meantime set up an appointment at a dealer to have transmission flushed, and I guess go from there?

If you are going to have it flushed, you may want to consider some sort of cleaner prior to your appointment. There is also a filter however, from what I have seen, you can't change it without splitting the case. As far as a cleaner, I personally am fond of SeaFoam Trans Tune. Safe to leave in the transmission but, it will break up any deposits/varnish. Put it in and run it for a little while before your appointment. Then all the stuff that breaks up and floats around will be flushed out with your old fluid. If you don't the new clean fluid/detergents will break that stuff up and dirty your new fluid faster.
