Hey, I'm new in this forum so bear with me. OK, I have a problem here. There's some kind of whining that's coming from the engine compartment, and my dad and I aren't sure what it could be. I realize it could be a number of things, but if anyone has any ideas let me know. Thanks :)

My car has just started to make a whining noise within the past day. I'm pretty sure it's a glazed belt. Speaking of which, I'm gonna need new belts but I don'w know the size needed for my Jan 93 made mtx with shoshop aluminum underdrives.

mtx=manual transaxle, atx=automatic transaxle but since you have a 90 its a manual. Can you tell where the whining is coming from? Can you pop the hood and rev the engine and hear it?Try to see if you can locate the sound.

Yeah, actually it is an MTX (now that I know what the difference is), and no I haven't tried listening to where it's coming from. Could it be anything serious, and if so, how serious? It's been going on for quite a while now.

Welcome to the forum.

Have you changed the timing belt recently? If so, check if the noise is coming from the timing belt cover. There is a Ford TSB on this. It is a timing belt whine. I can't remember the number but my car had a timing belt change before I got it and has made the noise. It can be fixed by doing the correct procedure for the belt change. If you haven't done the 60k then you might want to do it some time in the near future (just preventative maintenance). thumb

Good luck and keep us posted

Anything that rotates under the hood can cause a whining noise.

You will have to localize the origin of the sound, then try to pinpoint it using a mechanic's stehoscope.

Speculating about all the possibilities without an inspection is pretty pointless.

OK well, it's a '90 with 137k on it (wow),
That's not to high of miles actually compared to some people on here.

That's what I'm talking about! I like my glazed belt. It can make people think I'm running boost. lol Definately gotta call shoshop for the belts. I was hoping someone on here had the belt sizes, but it's only a phone call, the always possible chance of a lost order and large delay. The belt isn't a big deal unless it breaks, and my car explodes. headbang I kinda winged it when tightening the belts. The one was too loose for a while and wore a bit prematurely I'm guessing.
