Ok here's the deal. I put out an ad here on campus saying I wanted a sub/amp setup. I got several replies but don't know which to pick. Can someone here with some audio knowledge help me out? Here's my choices:

1) 10" polk audio sub in a mtx thunderbox(sealed) and a mtx amp. $100 negotiable. (not sure how many watts - i'm waiting for a response from the guy.)

2) 2 6-1/2 subs in a bandpass box with an amp. It is all Jensen. probably 60 bucks for it all would do. subs can handle between 25 and 100 watts each I beleive and the amp is I think 44 x 2. I got all the stuff last year at Christmas and the Subs have a best buy warranty for 3 more years if you blow them up or anything.

3) 2 15" pioneer subs and a pioneer PRS-x320 amp. It's not in a bandpass box, just a sealed box. The box it made of 1" high
density particle board and it has black carpet. The subs were $165 each new and the amp was $380 new. I am getting rid of them because I am upgrading to 2-MTX thunder 8000's and I need to get rid of these to pay for a new amp. (He doesn't have a set price. He's looking to get at least $300 but told me to make him an offer.)

4) 2 - 10" JL w-0 series subs. when they were brand new they were $100 each i think.....i'd take like $65 for the pair.

i also have a brand new amp.....valued at $250. it's a 600 watt Planet Audio, and it has a 5 year warranty...the deal w/ the warranty is that if it breaks....you take it to the store w/ the receipt and they give you a brand new one....no questions asked...that's the great thing about planet audio....i think i'd want $200 for that, and i'd throw in all the wires and everything w/ that....the price of a GOOD wiring kit is at least $50.......

the only other issue is......would you want my box or not.....here's the thing...the box is great...it's still airtight, and has brand new blue carpet...but it's a truck box, so it's long and prolly wouldn't fit in your trunk....however...the speakers can be taken out...

if you want the box speakers and amp, i'd give it all to you for $275...minus the box.....the best part of this deal is really the amp....it's a GREAT amp and the warranty makes it sweeter

Okay, sorry for such a long post but I just don't know all that much about this kind of stuff. RickieFrat, Edien, SHOFF, all you other audio-freak guys (

) out there...please help me out here. I'd appreciate any and all thoughts/opinions. Thanks guys!

Edit - Forgot to mention that yes, I am on kind of a tight budget (college student!) and yes, I still need trunk space (college student!

) for all my stuff. So I guess that might figure into the equation there somewhere.

i wouldn;t go with 2, its just not enough. if you have the money i would go with number 3, but it will also take up some room in your trunk. if you are worried about space and are tight on money, 4 is good enough for bass. 3 is probably your best set up

come on guys, please help me out here! I only have a few days here to decide cuz I leave this Friday for Christmas Break (and these guys probably want an answer before we all leave campus). I'm going to go hear choice #2 in a little while - I'll post again with how it sounded.

One other thing...I don't really need (or want) a competition system or anything. All I want is bass that doesn't buzz like my stock sub. just decent, solid bass. that's it.

Ok, I just went and listened to the 2 - 6 1/2" Jensen subs. They each handle about 100 watts and there's a Jensen amp, too. It sounded pretty decent. Nothing that will shake off the rearview mirror...but decent, solid bass. (with NO buzzing!
smile.gif
) I told him I'd give him an answer in the next day or 2. Another good thing is that the box isn't all that big so it doesn't take up a lot of trunk space. It was maybe 2 feet wide by 1 foot tall. Had plexiglass on the front so you can see the speakers and had "JENSEN" written on it. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

Edit - How many ohms is the stock sub? Should I make sure the aftermarket ones are the same???

Edit 2 - I think I found the exact model of both the subs and the amp. Here's links to them on Jensen's web site.
Subs - http://www.jensen.com/mobile/non/subwoofers/ks620bp.htm
Amp - http://www.jensen.com/mobile/non/amps/xa222.htm

IMO jenson products are pretty crappy. ive never heard anything good about them, and was never impressed with how they sounded. #3 the pioneer deal sounds decent if you have the money, and want to sacrifice the trunkspace. #2 JL's high-end subs are among the best, so i would guess their lower-end product is pretty good too. deal #1, with one 10" sub, wont give you all that much bass, unless the amp wattage is relatively large - find out what the RMS and MAX watts are for the amps, because it is important. for reference, i have a pair of 12" MTX subs with 300 RMS, 600 MAX coming from my sub amp, and this provides me with all the bass i need, but is definitely not overwhelming. you will be satisfied if you get an amp with between 200-300 RMS, and 400-600 MAX watts.

i put 1 10" woofer in my g/fs car, left all the sound deadening behind the seat and it shakes the mirror. its a hand built woofer and an autotek amp pushing 300rms. so, you can get good bass with 1 10", it just depends on the set up. if you're wondering, the speaker was hand made because it was a prototype.

ok if you want to spend the money go with the two 15's any 15 bumbs and two is gonna bump real niceso go with that but here's my question what kind of music do u listen if it;s rap go with the 15's but if it's like rock and other stuff save your money and just get some component speakers they will give you plenty of bass but also the sound of all the insturments will be extremely lound and clear so that's what i would do, don't waste your money on 6and half they blow

#1 with out a doubt if your look for something that is going to sound decient with out taking up alot of space. If your looking for something loud and sound like **** get the pioneers. If you get the jensons you might as well hand the money out to a ****** and let her scream for an hour. It will sound better and last longer

Go with the Polk. Its a complete setup and you get the sound and reliability of Polk. Are the EX or DB ? If they are the DB JUMP ON IT !!!! I haven't heard a better sub for the money. And since I've been involved in IASCA Events, I've heard quite a few. (Not to mention 3 1/2 years at Circuit City to boot).

I would go with 1 or 3. Though with the 3 you loose around half of your trunk. Though that amp doesnt seem to be enough. One will save you room and probaly give you good sound. Though dont plan to bump much.
Jensen just plan out sucks dont get them. Besides most people dont use 6.5 for subs. I would be careful about the Planet Audio amp. I havent heard of the brand befor and I know of a lot of brands. Most amps run around $1 per watt. If you go below that you are either getting a deal or ripped off. JL though is a good brand for subs.

when these guys "demo" this stuff for you, you have to consider two things:
1.What kind of vechile are they in and how much airspace do the boxes have??
2.Also, check out what kind of settings they have the amp set at before you let them turn it on and screw around with it, b/c you have to think that whatever it is on is how he listens to it and you could get a pretty good idea about they are cared for or not cared for.

To be completly honest with you I would not buy anything used, I have been down that road too many times and you have no idea how the amp/subs were treated before, if the warranty carries over even though the product has switched owners b/c you will be out however much $$ you paid you it. In my opinion save your money buy something new w/a warranty that you want. Dont rush yourself, you could make a wrong choice that you will pay for in the end.

Well, one other thing that I should have mentioned. I really am not looking for a competition-quality system. All I want is bass that doesn't buzz when it hits. That's it. Also, I may not be driving this car very much longer. If I buy Laurence's (DfwSHO) 94 MTX, I won't be driving this car as much. My girlfriend will, more than likely, be driving my ATX (more than I will). And she doesn't really want a "ghetto" system (to use her term, haha). So I guess that also figures into things. I may just get the stock sub replacement mentioned in the Classifieds for ease of installation. We'll see.
