i need a little more advice please. There are 2 options offered for my atx transmission rebuild, stock v/s performance. I asked the trans man the differences there, and he gave me an explaination, but i'm still not completely clear, as all the things he told me were over my head, i am no trans mechanic. The only thing i was clear on was that he told me was the feeling of the shift would be different. Stock=very smooth shift, performance= harder shift, or atleast one that is more detectable.what type, (if any) of effect would this have on my motor? does one wind out longer v/s other, or shift faster? And, what are the differences of the components of the rebuild, the way i understood him, the performance rebuild includes better quality? Theres really no difference as far as price goes, so i'm a little confused there. So any info as far as the difference between the two would be appreciated. Thanks to all!

I haven't had to do this to my GenIII ATX yet but 'performance' is a relative term and not all tranny persons/companies offer the same or similar replacement parts and upgrades. It's hard to say without being privy to the explanation.
Generally a performance tranny will offer quicker and harder shifts. This won't change anything with the engine performance except to put the power down a little harsher. My ATX is mushy and I would welcome firmer shifts. If the unit offers more robust internal components I would go with that.

yea, durability #1, but was wondering about it being ******* my motor as i do have some miles, and its 15 yrs old, i'm trying to preserve as much as possible, he gave me a heck of an explaination, just was way over my head. I, like you would also welcome firmer shift, but not at the expense of tearing up my motor, so if u say its not gonna mess with it, i think i'll go that way.i will be so happy to get this fixed finally, its driving me crazy, been having bad dreams about gettin ripped off...its all the ifs/but/and unknowns, thanks for advice though

There's no guarantees for any work, but I hope you get a warranty ;)

SHO ownership ain't the cheapest but hopefully it's something you can enjoy.

Ask him exactly whats included in the performance rebuild, even if you have no idea what hes talking about ask for specifics, remember them as best you can. Then get back to us.

IMO this is too much money to put in a 15 yr old taurus. I'm not dogging the SHO, obviously im a fan. But for the money the rebuild will cost you, you could get a lower mileage good condition SHO. If the car has sentimental values i understand, but it'd have to be very sentimental for me to keep it. These cars can be had cheap in good condition if you flip enough rocks over, esp the ATXs

When I had to put a tranny in my ATX SHO I chose to buy a Ford rebuilt unit. It is a very comparable price and Ford warranties the tranny for 3 years and 36k miles. Plus it is a labor/parts warranty.

...usually tranny shop warranties are 12month/12k miles.

I was in a similar position with my SHO. I had owned her for a long time, already rebuilt the motor and it was worth it to put in a new tranny.

BS.

Certain repair parts cost the same to keep a car on the road. Whether you have a $500 old SHO or a 5-year-old car, a/c repair will run you $1,000 - $2,000 . If it's your only car, it's the cost of driving something dependable.

This is the downside of owning ANY ATX car. It's gonna cost when it needs repair, whether it's a $500, $5,000, or $50,000 car.

What are you all gonna do when the supply of cheap SHO cars starts drying up (which it already is)?? The cost of keeping a used car going is still cheaper, but you have an irregular expense outlay.

FWIW, a tranny with firmer shifts is easier on the tranny and parts. More wear is encountered with soft shifts. And no effect on the engine.

So your all saying that the added "shock" isn't transmitted to the pins that the planatary gears ride on? Me thinks something is taking a "hit" in that transmission... maybe the shafts? Anyone ran with one for 50,000 or so then took one apart to see?

They seem kinda small, but then again, I'm no ATX genius... I've just seen how higher horsepower does special things to planatary gearsets in larger trucks... the ones with the bigger engines usually had the issues first on our worktrucks.. as far as I knew they were all the same Ford trannys.. who knows tho..
